Warriors guard Monta Ellis, according to a team spokesperson, will join the team in Phoenix. Though he did not practice with the team Sunday in Oakland, Ellis is expected to be in the lineup for Monday’s game against the host Suns.

But coach Mark Jackson stopped short of guaranteeing Ellis will play.

“We hope so,” Jackson said. “But the bottom like is we’re really sincere with letting him take as much time as possible. We understand his loss and what he’s going through and we’re there for him.”

Ellis missed Saturday’s home loss to Philadelphia. He was in Mississippi attending his grandmother’s funeral. Without Ellis, Golden State struggled mightily on offense – even with point guard Stephen Curry back in the lineup. The Warriors (2-2) managed just 79 points on 38.2 percent shooting Saturday.

Curry, who missed Wednesday’s win over New York due to a sprained right ankle, scored 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting. He got it going early, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. But that prompted Philadelphia to gear the defense to stop him, sending traps his way.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, no one else had it going. Power forward David Lee was the only other Warrior to reach double figures, totaling 19 points on 8-for-24 shooting.

Golden State totaled 12 points in the third quarter when Philadelphia pulled away.

Having Ellis — and his 21 points and 7.7 assists per game — would certainly helped the Warriors. But Jackson

said the Warriors are ready to help Ellis.

“You know he’s hurting, so it’s going to be tough,” Jackson said. “A lot of times, the way this works, you get away from it and you get back to basketball, it helps the healing process.”

What are your opinions.

What a difference one night can make. Just 24 hours after getting blown out by the Los Angeles Clippers 105-86 to kick off their season in underwhelming fashion, the Golden State Warriors put on an absolute clinic at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on Monday night, beating the Chicago Bulls 99-91. What a way for my hometown team to get their first win of the shortened 66-game campaign, and Mark Jackson his first ever coaching victory.

As I wrote yesterday, it appears that the Warriors are going to go as Stephen Curry goes, and he most certainly went last night. After a dismal opening day performance, Curry showed flashes of the brilliant point guard we are all hoping he’ll be, putting up an amazing stat line of 21 points, ten assists, seven rebounds, and six steals, not to mention a couple of breathtaking alley-oops, including a three-quarters court toss to Dorell Wright. And that’s all with missing a large chunk of the fourth quarter after re-injuring his ankle yet again, this time after landing on Kyle Korver’s foot. (Apparently Curry is going to have to miss the Warriors’ next game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, making an already tough contest even tougher).

Jackson has been stressing that this Golden State Warriors team is going to be focused around defense, so perhaps it’s only fitting that in his first ever win, the team played great D on reigning league MVP Derrick Rose, holding him to 13 points on 4 of 17 shooting, and that they also managed to rack up 16 steals in the process. I know it’s been a while since there’s been basketball, but this was the best defensive effort that I’ve seen from a W’s team in a very, very long time.

And I’m not going to say that I’m right (it’s only been two games after all), but Kwame Brown’s performance Monday night was inspired. In 23 solid minutes off of the bench, the big man made in impact defending against the always tough Joakim Noah. And a +/- of +21? Nicely done, Kwame.

So what does it all mean? That the Warriors are going to play tough D, beat up on good Eastern Conference teams, effectively use 11 players (there is no telling the depths of Coach Jackson’s bench), and win games without scoring 100 points? Probably not. But even if this is just a one-time thing, it was great to see the W’s put together a performance that shows the potential of what this team could one day be.

Can they do it again on Wednesday without Curry against the Knicks? I’m not going to be the one who says that they can’t.

After making the league’s biggest offseason splash in acquiring superstar
point guard Chris Paul, things may finally be looking up for the Los Angeles
Clippers.

With a palpable level of excitement surrounding the team for the first time
in a long while, the visiting Clippers open the lockout-shortened season against
the Golden State Warriors on Christmas night.

Los Angeles, which has just one winning season and two playoff appearances
over the last 18 years, enters 2011-12 with plenty to be excited about thanks to
Paul’s arrival. After a deal that would have sent Paul to the crosstown Lakers
was rejected by the league, the Clippers acquired the four-time All-Star from
New Orleans for guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu
and a 2012 first-round draft pick.

Though Paul certainly didn’t come cheap, the opportunity to pair him with
reigning Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin was too good to pass up.

“We’re not getting caught up in the hype. We can’t control what happens in
the media and what people say, but we can control what happens in this locker
room,” Paul said. “We still have to go out there and continue to get better and
compete. We’re just making sure guys stay focused and understand that it’s a
long season.

“One thing that can’t be measured in the box score is how hard you play. And
as long as we do that every night, we have enough talent that we’re going to
give ourselves an opportunity to win.”

Griffin averaged 22.5 points and 12.1 rebounds to rank 12th and fourth in
the league, respectively. While he stands to become all the more dominant with
Paul running the show, he’s trying to keep an even keel.

“Our goal is the playoffs, obviously, but I’m not going to sit here and
promise that we’re going to win this amount of games, or that we’re going to go
this far in the playoffs, win 60 games and guarantee championships,” Griffin
said. “There’s going to be none of that.”

Besides welcoming Paul, the Clippers signed two-time All-Star Caron Butler
and agreed to terms with five-time All-Star Chauncey Billups.

With its impressive offseason, Los Angeles seems all but certain to improve
upon the 32-50 record it posted last season.

“We all know what we can do with this team. And with the new guys, I just
think it’s going to take us to another level,” said big man DeAndre Jordan, who
remained with the club after the Clippers matched the offer sheet he got from
Golden State.

“We’re going to try to make a run at the postseason. With the moves that
we’ve made, you can tell that we’re committed to winning this year and for years
to come. I’m happy about the direction we’re going in.”

While the Warriors didn’t make nearly as much offseason noise, they’re
counting on new coach Mark Jackson to help turn things around.

Golden State, which finished 36-46 in 2010-11, has missed the playoffs in
all but one of the previous 17 seasons.

“We’re not going to be an excuse team,” he said. “We’re going to find a way
to go get it done. We will be a playoff basketball team.

“… I’m here with a group of guys that I believe in. I’m here with a new
ownership team. I’m here with a new management team, and it’s an exciting time.
I really am not just hoping, I’m believing, I’m anticipating big things.”

The Warriors feature one of the more potent backcourts in the league with
Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry. Ellis ranked eighth in the NBA last season with
an average of 24.1 points and Curry posted 18.6 per game.

Neither Ellis nor Curry, however, are opening this campaign as they would
have hoped. While Ellis was accused of sexual harassment Wednesday in a lawsuit
by a former team employee, Curry is listed as day-to-day with a sprained right
ankle and his status for Sunday is uncertain.

Small forward Dorell Wright, who broke out last season with a career-best
16.4 scoring average, gives the team a formidable third scoring option while big
men David Lee and Andris Biedrins look to control the glass.

These teams split four meetings last season, but Golden State has taken 10
of 11 at home against the Clippers, including three straight by 19.3 points per
contest.

OAKLAND, Calif. — A former Warriors employee filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against star guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday, alleging Ellis sent her unwanted text messages that included a photo of his genitals.

In her lawsuit, which also names the team, Erika Ross Smith alleges that Ellis began sending her several dozen explicit text messages, sometimes several times a day, starting in November 2010 while she worked for the Warriors’ community relations department.

The messages included lines such as “I want to be with you” and “Hey Sexy,” and periodically asked her what she was wearing or doing, according to the lawsuit.

Smith would often reply with “What do you want?” or “I am sleeping,” the lawsuit claims.

“On a micro level, my client has endured unwanted harassment, has suffered and continues to suffer emotional distress and trauma,” her attorney, Burt Boltuch, said at a news conference in his Oakland office. “On a macro level, this type of conduct, especially in the sports world, must stop.

“She was embarrassed. She was intimidated. She felt scared and helpless.”

Boltuch said his client rejected Ellis’ advances and feared that no one would believe her. Boltuch also showed a photo of what he said was Ellis’ genitalia that the guard allegedly sent to Smith’s work-issued cellphone on Dec. 17, 2010, a day after he complained to the team about her job performance.

When questioned if the photo came from Ellis, Boltuch responded, “We know it came from him.”

Bryant injures right wrist

LOS ANGELES — The Lakers said Kobe Bryant wouldn’t play in their preseason finale Wednesday night because of an injury suffered in the team’s first preseason game against the Clippers. Bryant is being listed as day to day. The Lakers said an MRI revealed that Bryant had torn a ligament in his right wrist.

Footnotes. The Hawks said starting point guard Jeff Teague suffered a sprained left ankle during Wednesday’s practice and is considerable questionable for tonight’s preseason game against the Bobcats.

• The Bobcats waived guard Will Blalock and forwards Ronald Dupree and Ismail Muhammad.

The Golden State Warriors tip off their 2011-12 season Christmas night against the revamped Los Angeles Clippers.

Few people have high hopes for the Bay Area team in that game. And the same probably holds true for the year as a whole.

Golden State had a dismal 2010-11 season, finishing 12th in the Western Conference and third in the Pacific Division with a 36-46 record.

Obviously no one statistic will tell the tale of why the Warriors ended up 10 games out of the playoff hunt, so consider a few.

Golden State was in the NBA’s bottom three in the following categories: turnovers per game (16.1), rebound differential (-349), free throws made per game (15.7) and average points allowed (105.7).

Those problems, and others, worked together to crush the Warriors’ chances last year, leaving them with many questions entering an abbreviated 2011-12 season.

One possible answer, according to upper management, was a coaching change.

The team hired former NBA point guard and ESPN analyst Mark Jackson, hoping a new voice could get through to the players.

The first-year (and first-time) head coach has a lot of pressure to fix issues that date back to the Don Nelson days and actually get good results from a team with one of the most talented starting lineups in the league.

Jackson has to get the Warriors’ out of their run-and-gun mentality; it’s not sustainable, especially for a 66-game season jam-packed with back-to-backs.

Consistent defense will be a key.

Last year, Golden State ranked second in steals per game but 20th in opponent field goal percentage. The team got occasional stops but couldn’t keep the other guys from making shots – definitely not a recipe for success.

Since new acquisitions did not include defensive powerhouses, the front office is banking on Jackson’s ability to convince the returning stars to play well on both sides of the ball.

That of course implies the hope that his coaching style won’t get in the way of the team’s offensive prowess.

The Warriors finished seventh in the NBA in points per game (their fifth straight season in the top 10), fourth in 3-pointers made and second in 3-point percentage.

Shooting guard Monta Ellis had arguably his best season, power forward David Lee wowed with his consistent results and small forward Dorell Wright should have won the Most Improved Player Award (posting career-best averages in minutes, rebounds, assists, steals, points and 3-pointers made).

Golden State needs those three to perform as well or better this year to have any hope.

Starting point guard Stephen Curry (who injured his ankle in Tuesday’s preseason game) had a decent sophomore season but needs to work on getting more assists and having fewer turnovers. No doubt Jackson will help there.

Then there’s the big white Latvian elephant in the Warrior locker room.

Center Andris Biedrins is coming off of a horrible season highlighted by laughable totals in games (59), free-throw percentage (32.3), blocks per game (0.9) and points per game (5.0).

In today’s NBA (and the modern Western Conference), the Warriors will not thrive without a reliable big man.

If Biedrins doesn’t come through early, he’ll find himself parked on the bench watching second-year man Ekpe Udoh or veteran Kwame Brown in the starting spot.

On the subject of role players, Golden State did little to bolster its backup lineup. On the whole, the team added a lot of youth and a lot of guards, but made no big-name splashes.

Maybe new consultant Jerry West has a hidden plan because a No. 1 priority for the Warriors this offseason should have been adding depth.

Having a young, unproven bench will likely hurt Golden State this year although the youthful energy could help during the back-to-backs (and one back-to-back-to-back).

The Warriors probably have lofty goals for themselves but their fans shouldn’t, especially considering the team split its only two preseason games of the year.

Some guys looked sharp in those matchups, but the team underachieved and blew a last-minute lead in Sacramento Tuesday night – not a good sign for a group that went 10-31 on the road last year.

A .500 finish would be a good result for the Warriors.

Maybe with the shortened season that could be enough to get into the postseason conversation. And who knows, the young team could start to click and somehow exceed those expectations.

An important indicator will be whether the Warriors survive their first 10 games, a daunting stretch against seven playoff teams from last year. If they don’t, they could find themselves out of the hunt when the season has only barely begun.

That’s all the news for today.

A former employee of the Golden State Warriors today sued team owners, executives and star guard Monta Ellis for sexual harassment, charging that lurid texts from the National Basketball Association star led to her termination.

Oakland resident Erika Smith was hired to work on community relations for the Warriors in 2007 and regularly interacted with team members as part of her duties until her termination in August, according to documents filed in Alameda Superior Court.

Her firing came nine days after a local media outlet inquired if Ellis was “stalking” Smith.

In November 2010, Ellis, who is married, allegedly began the first of a total of 61 unwelcome texts of a sexual nature to Smith’s work cell phone, including a photograph of his genitals.

According to the filings, “During the period that Monta Ellis was incessantly texting Plaintiff, Monta Ellis informed Plaintiff that the texting would not be discovered since he was using a ‘secret’ cellular phone that was kept by equipment manager and for which the bills went to Monta Ellis’ grandmother.”

A January 13, 2011 incident described in court documents alleges Juanika Ellis, Ellis’s wife, discovered the secret phone and texts, and was demanding the ouster from the Warriors organization of Smith, who had previously also worked for NBA teams the Washington Wizards and the Phoenix Suns.

Action was delayed, according to the documents, to ensure Monta Ellis wouldn’t learn of his wife’s knowledge until after a “big game” against the Los Angeles Lakers.

In a statement released to the media Wednesday afternoon, Rick Welts, Golden State Warriors president and chief operating officer, said the team discovered a consensual relationship between Smith and Ellis and intervened to tell both “to stop promptly, directly and fairly.”

“The Warriors have never taken any action against for any inappropriate reason, and we deny the allegations she is making.”

Burton Boltoch, an attorney representing Smith, disputed the existence of a consensual relationship, and added that the team “does not address the allegations, the coverup and the fact that they didn’t do an investigation.”

Neither Ellis nor team officials were immediately available for comment.

SACRAMENTO — The Warriors lost their exhibition season finale 95-91 to the host Sacramento Kings on Tuesday. But the defeat was overshadowed by another loss: point guard Stephen Curry.

Late in the first half, Curry sprained his right ankle — the same ankle that bothered him all last season — and had to be helped to the locker room. He never returned and left Power Balance Pavilion on crutches, his face hiding behind the shadow of his hood. He will be evaluated by Warriors doctors Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury and whether he’ll play in Sunday’s season opener against the visiting Los Angeles Clippers.

“Disappointed,” coach Mark Jackson said. “But the bottom line is we’re a no-excuse basketball team. … Hopefully, he’s back quick. But if not, we still have to go out and execute our game plan and fulfill the promise.”

Curry had seven points, five assists, three steals and no turnovers in 15 minutes before getting hurt. With 46.4 seconds left in the second quarter, Curry, backpedaling to the defensive end, appeared to roll his right ankle. After trying to walk it off, he buckled to the hardwood and writhed in pain on the sideline between the team’s benches.

Curry sprained his right ankle three times last season, the first in an exhibition game, and missed a total of eight games. Curry had surgery in May — performed by Dr. Bob Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte — to repair two ligaments

in his right ankle. He was cleared by doctors for full activity on Sept. 14 and hasn’t had any issues with the ankle before Tuesday.

“Tough loving Steph,” forward David Lee said after totaling 30 points and 13 rebounds against the Kings.

Second-year guard Ish Smith replaced Curry in the second-half lineup. Jackson said he gave Smith the nod over rookie Charles Jenkins so he could get a look at Smith, whom the Warriors claimed off waivers Friday.

Smith played just over 18 minutes, scoring two points on six shots with three assists. Down the stretch, guard Monta Ellis, who had 19 points and six assists, ran the point for the Warriors.

Though Jenkins was penciled in as the backup point guard, Jackson said he has multiple options at point guard that his staff will weigh over the next few days if Curry is out.

“We’ve got to look at it like it’s an opportunity for the next man,” Jackson said. “Ish Smith is a guy that was put on waivers (last Wednesday by Memphis). He’s got to look at it like, ‘What a blessing.’ “

With the Warriors down 92-91 inside of 30 seconds, Ellis swung the ball to an open man on the right wing. It was Klay Thompson, and he got a good look from 20 feet.

“I hadn’t airballed like that in awhile,” said Thompson, who finished with seven points on 2-for-15 shooting. “It felt good and everything, too. I thought it was in.”

After two free throws by Marcus Thornton, Golden State had the ball down 94-91 with 16.4 seconds left. Guess whom Jackson went to for the game-tying 3-pointer? Yup, Thompson.

But the rookie started the play by going to the wrong spot. Then, he pump-faked himself out of a good look from 3, only to settle for a step-back 3-pointer that clanked.

“Klay made a mistake,” Jackson said. “But we got a good look out of it, and we learned from it.”

Thompson went 6 for 25 shooting with 16 points in two exhibition games. He has missed all eight of his 3-point attempts.

Thompson said he’s going to spend the next few days in the gym and vowed it won’t happen again.

“I’m not going to lose confidence. That’s the worst thing you can do as a shooter,” Thompson said. “That was tough. It’s going to linger around for a couple days. … I’m just happy Coach Jax has that confidence in me to call the play for me like that. I just feel bad for my teammates that I had a performance like that.”

Center Kwame Brown made his Warriors debut Tuesday. Jackson said he was happy with the conditioning progress Brown made. He played just shy of 17 minutes, totaling six points and four rebounds. Andris Biedrins, the starter, had two points in 18 minutes.

Warriors forward Brandon Rush, whom the team acquired Monday from Indiana in exchange for Lou Amundson, was with the team but did not dress. Rush, who arrived Monday night, has not practiced with the Warriors yet.

That’s all for today.

Mark Jackson faces no lack of challenges as the Warriors open an abbreviated training camp Friday.

The first-time coach had little contact with players because of the NBA lockout. The roster is in flux. And now he has just days to implement his system before the Warriors rush into a truncated season that begins Christmas night.

No matter, said the ultra-confident Jackson. We’re still making the playoffs.

“It’s a tailor-made excuse, and we’re not going to start this season by making excuses,” Jackson said of the labor stoppage. “I’m not going to give the guys an option to say, ‘Well, we wish we had a longer time.’ “

Besides, Jackson added, he has two local examples of coaches who didn’t allow a lockout to thwart them as they began new jobs — the 49ers’ Jim Harbaugh and the Raiders’ Hue Jackson.

“They’re great leaders,” said Mark Jackson, who visited a 49ers practice last week. “They’ve turned things around. They’ve made things that I look forward to making here. … Neither one of those coaches used a shortened preparation time as an excuse, and we won’t either.”

The 49ers (10-2) already have clinched the NFC West title for their first postseason berth since 2002, while the Raiders (7-5) remain in the playoff hunt.

But Jackson, a 17-year NBA player who most recently was an ABC and ESPN broadcaster, inherits an arguably tougher task as he tries to turn around a team that has made the playoffs just once since 1994.

While Jackson said he has been preparing for this moment his entire life, he has never been a coach — unlike Harbaugh or Hue Jackson.

“You can say you know all about coaching, but you don’t because you’ve never actually done it before,” said Hall of Fame coach and current broadcaster Hubie Brown. “The question is: ‘Can you handle the pressure of the game?’ Mark has done it as a player, but he’s never done this before.”

Like Jackson, Brown once left a TV analyst’s chair to run an NBA bench — returning to coaching after a15-year break. He turned the Memphis Grizzlies into a playoff team and was named the league’s coach of the year in 2004.

“There’s a major difference,” Brown said. “I already was a high school, college and professional coach when I went back. Mark is a completely different situation.”

Longtime NBA executive Donnie Walsh said he has similar you-think-you-know-but-you-don’t advice for Jackson.

“I told Larry Bird the same thing when he got into coaching,” Walsh said. “So it is something that Mark is going to have to get over. But I have no doubt he will.”

Brown also approves of Jackson’s top priority: changing the team’s casual attitude toward defense.

“He understands the weaknesses of the franchise,” Brown said.

Golden State yielded 105.7 points a game last season — tied for third-worst in the league. That won’t be tolerated, Jackson said.

“Don’t just anticipate it, expect it,” Jackson said when asked if the Warriors could play a physical-style defense. “We will be a gutty, gritty defensive team that’s going to make life tough for teams to play against us.”

Jackson added that past Warriors teams “had great ability to score the basketball but took no pride on the defensive end.”

It’s impossible to say what the Warriors’ roster will look like in the opener against the Los Angeles Clippers. But stopping the opposition — instead of trying to outscore them — will be the mission for whoever is on the court.

“I could defend, as slow and pitiful as I was, because I bought in,” Jackson said of his playing days. “And I’ve certainly got guys now who are better than me. So there’s no excuse. I’m not just looking to change the culture. The culture has changed.”

Jackson noted the difference Harbaugh has made with the 49ers. He saw how Harbaugh participated in drills, did some trash-talking and generally acted like one of the guys at practice.

“I’ve been at practices as a player, and a viewer watching coaches suck the life out of teams,” Jackson said. “I’ve also seen practices where coaches instill confidence and pride, and guys want to run through a wall for them. That’s what they have and what we want.”

But as he respects what the 49ers and Raiders have done, Jackson said he wants his team to forge its own identity.

“Let’s take care of business and have folks talk about us,” he said.

Read More: nba trade rumors 2011, Chris Paul (G – NOH), New Orleans Hornets, Golden State Warriors

Chris Paul has a lot of suitors for his services. The New Orleans point guard has put himself on the trading block, and there are plenty of offers out there. The Golden State Warriors have been putting out offers with Stephen Curry (and potentially Monta Ellis), but they won’t make the deal unless Paul agrees to an extension.

Which he apparently won’t. David Aldridge of NBA.com reports.

Chris Paul will not commit to signing a contract extension after this season with either the Golden State Warriors or Los Angeles Clippers if he is traded to either team by the New Orleans Hornets, citing the potential financial hit if he were to do that rather than becoming a free agent and signing a new deal with a new team next summer, according to league sources. That has left potential deals with both teams in limbo….

It’d make sense for Paul not to lock himself into an extension; he doesn’t know how good his team might be when he gets traded. Almost the entire league knows he wants to join a big franchise like the New York Knicks or the Los Angeles Lakers, where there will always be superstars and there should be a greater possibility of being on a championship contender. The Warriors have a lot of issues, and it’s hard for them to really be considered as a team that’s on the rise until they make some big moves.

Until those moves are made, Golden State is probably going to drop behind other prospects in the race for the best point guard in the league.

To discuss the idea of CP3 possibly leaving the Hornets or potentially going to the Warriors, head to At The Hive (our New Orleans SB Nation community) and Golden State of Mind (our Golden State SB Nation community).

It’s going to be a very Merry Christmas in the Bay Area this year.

It was just announced that my hometown team, the Golden State Warriors, will help kick off the NBA’s brand new 66-game season on Christmas Day, as the final part of the five contests that are taking place on the 25th.

The Warriors will host the Los Angeles Clippers to wrap up what should be a fantastic day of basketball, which includes Boston at New York, Miami at Dallas, Chicago at the Lakers, and Orlando at Oklahoma City.

Now the reasons why I’m excited for this game are almost too numerous to mention, but we should just start with the most obvious one first: the NBA is back, and just like everyone else, I want to see my team play as soon as possible. Who wants to wait until the 26th? Give me a game on Christmas, please.

It’s really hard to say what kind of year the Warriors are going to have, and who will be on the roster come opening night. Will Monta Ellis(notes) still be on the team? (Those rumors of a trade with Memphis for Rudy Gay(notes) are coming up once again). Will new coach Mark Jackson manage to help take point guard Stephen Curry’s(notes) game to the next level? (Now wouldn’t that be fantastic). Will Andris Biedrins(notes) manage to get more than single-digit points and rebounds for the first time in what feels like a very, very long time? (Almost certainly not, but it’s a new season, we can hope). And will owner Joe Lacob use the amnesty clause from the new Collective Bargaining Agreement to shed David Lee’s(notes) contract? (The answer to that last question seems to be a resounding no).

So yes, who knows what W’s team we’ll see out there on Christmas Day, but no matter who it is, I know for sure that I’m going to enjoy seeing the Oracle Arena rocking, and the Warriors showing off their run-and-gun style up and down the floor.

And of course if you’re reading this and not a Warriors fan, there’s also another good reason to tune in. The Clippers employ a fairly large and athletic power forward by the name of Blake Griffin(notes), who has been known to dunk on a player or two, and also has a thing for jumping over Kia’s. Griffin himself is worth the price of admission (or at least the simple turning on of your television).

The game begins at 10:30 PM Eastern/7:30 PM Pacific on Christmas Day and will be shown nationally on ESPN.

Welcome back NBA – I’ve missed you.

As if Mark Jackson’s tenure as the Golden State Warriors head coach hasn’t been strange enough with the lockout, Jackson spoke with the media Wednesday and discussed some of his Jax-brand of basketball ideals, which are a bit different from most NBA coaches to say the least.

Make the jump to see what he had to say.

Jackson is a man of faith, and will not let that take a back-seat to his duties as a coach. Therefore, Jackson will not use any curse words when on the bench, or anywhere else for that matter:

Jackson hasn’t used a curse word in more than 20 years, and he doesn’t plan to start anytime soon.

“You’ll never hear that,” he said. “I’m going to treat (refs and players) with respect, and I’m going to be demanding. … I truly believe that you coach the guys in practice … but you let the guys play the games.”

He’ll likely be one of the only coaches in the NBA not using four letter expletives as part of his coaching mantra, which is kind of refreshing. Hopefully all that ‘respect’ equals some wins this season (if we have one).

Another interesting note is how Jackson views going over game tape, as well as spending time on the team in general.

He said he doesn’t put much stock in getting to the building at 6 a.m. and staying all day. His stance is the same for film study.

“I’ve played for coaches that used it above and beyond, even out of control,” Jackson said. “I’m a guy that will use it to show examples. I’m not a guy you’re going to see with bags under my eyes because I’ve watched film all night long.”

Once again, as long as you’re winning ball games that’s fine with the fans, but when the W’s begin a tailspin there might be some talk of the team being unprepared. Let’s hope Jax knows what he is doing.

It’s a new era for the Golden State Warriors, with owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber leading the franchise and head coach Mark Jackson plucked from the ESPN broadcast booth to mold the players into winners. No one’s quite sure what the team is going to look like a few years from now, but Chris Cohan and his cronies being nowhere near the franchise’s Oakland offices has bred a good amount of optimism. Still, the new braintrust hasn’t proven much of anything — Lacob and Guber have had just one transitional season as owners and Jackson has never coached at any level.

Ultimately, they’ll only be able to win over fans with wins. But, for now, they’re trying in other ways. On Wednesday, the Warriors held an event for roughly 3,000 fans at Oracle Arena. Based on comments from the team’s head honchos, they are setting some huge goals. From Rusty Simmons of the San Francisco Chronicle (via TBJ):

“Don’t stand up and clap when we’re a playoff basketball team, because we won’t be standing up and clapping as a team,” Jackson said. “Our ultimate goal will be to hang a championship banner.”

Those kinds of stirring and outrageous statements were the norm as about 3,000 Warriors season-ticket holders listened to a panel discussion with the team’s hierarchy, including Jackson, co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber and executive board member Jerry West. [...]

The foursome was introduced to the crowd like a team’s starting lineup. They took seats at midcourt under blue and yellow lighting as some of the league’s elite introduced each one via previously recorded video. David Stern introduced Lacob, Magic Johnson for Guber, Pat Riley for West and Reggie Miller for Jackson.

Wow, it is really too perfect to have Miller introduce Jackson. I mean, not only were they teammates in Indiana, but they have also been the two most widely despised announcers of NBA games for the last two seasons. I bet they even traded tips on how to spout off even more cliches about a sport they understand at an expert level.

The real issue here, of course, is not related to Jackson’s famous friend. Instead, it’s figuring out why a coach with no experience whatsoever would pretend that the playoffs are an insubstantial goal for a team that’s made the postseason twice in the last 19 seasons. When the “We Believe” team made the playoffs as the eighth seed in 2007, fans jumped for joy. I know, I was one of them. Beating the Mavericks that year was just considerable icing on the cake.

I understand the idea behind Jackson’s quotes: He wants to shoot for the highest heights of the sport, and that competitiveness is noble. On the other hand, he’s also setting himself up for failure. It’s perfectly fine to set multiple goals for his team, the last of which should definitely be winning a championship. To act as if anything short of ultimate glory isn’t worth cheering is pigheaded and irresponsible. Making the playoffs would be a terrific step in the right direction for a franchise that hasn’t had a coherent plan for some time now. Fans are smart enough to realize that these things take time.

Jackson’s biggest problem with the Warriors is that, because he hasn’t coached a single game, he appears to be all talk with no substance. These comments do nothing to dispel those concerns. As long as he makes ridiculous promises, he might find it difficult to get the respect he covets so dearly.

New Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson will have plenty of input on the bench. The Warriors on Thursday hired five more assistants for Jackson, a former NBA point guard who has no coaching experience. Joining Michael Malone on the team’s staff will be Pete Myers, Wes Unseld Jr. and Jerry DeGregorio as assistant coaches and Darren Erman and Kris Weems as assistant of player development, the team announced Thursday. Myers, a former player, had worked for the Chicago Bulls the last 12 years, primarily as a scout. Unseld, the son of Hall of Famer Wes Unseld, had been with the Washington Wizards for 13 years.
