With the latest round of NBA chatter surrounding the point guard, Curry said that he has been told by Warriors general manager Larry Riley and new coach Mark Jackson that he is “safe and secure” with the only franchise he has ever known.

At least for now.

The latest buzz with Curry involves New Orleans guard Chris Paul, who holds a player option for next season but has been reluctant to sign an extension with the Hornets and could opt for free agency in the summer if he’s not traded. The Warriors have refused to part ways with Curry in any such deal because of his favorable contract and upside, and there’s a more pressing need for an experienced center.

Nothing short of a blockbuster deal that nets the franchise considerable return will likely change that mindset.

“They want me here,” Curry said. “Obviously, there’s the business of basketball and there are things that may happen with a GM having to make a decision for the best interest of the team. When you have a guy like Chris Paul, who is a franchise player, that’s something you really have to think about it with anybody on the roster. I understand that. I’m not going to be upset if they entertained that.”

New owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have promised to make splashy signings and bold moves to revamp a team that has made the playoffs just once since 1994. The brass hired Jackson as a first-time coach, former agent Bob Myers as assistant general manager and respected executive Jerry West as a board member this summer.

All they need now is wins.

As has been the case the last two years, almost any major deal for the Warriors would involve parting ways with Curry or backcourt teammate Monta Ellis. Nobody understands that more than Curry, whose name generates more inquiries into Golden State than anybody on the roster.

“It’s nice to be in the conversation with a guy like that,” Curry said of Paul. “I know myself, I’d be part of a package, but that’s something that’s going to happen when you’re in this career, in this business, and you’ve got to run with it.”

Even while working out, it’s not exactly easy for Curry and others to overlook trade talk.

Lacob peered down from his office window above the Warriors practice court Wednesday, watching players compete in a four-on-four half-court game and run sprints and other conditioning drills supervised by trainers. Riley, Jackson and other members of the coaching staff also looked out of their office windows on occasion.

The voluntary workouts, of course, have no coaches involved until a new collective bargaining agreement can be ratified. Ellis and center Andris Biedrins showed up at the facility for the first time since the NBA lockout, although they didn’t participate. Training camp is expected to open Friday.

“We just really can’t wait to get going for real,” said second-round pick Jeremy Tyler, who became the first American-born player to drop out of high school for a professional basketball career overseas in 2009 until he was eligible for the draft this year. “Been waiting a long time for this chance. Just glad it’s finally here.”

Golden State’s biggest need is still size.

The Warriors pledged to be active in trade discussions, and free agent centers Tyson Chandler and Nene are among the franchise’s top targets. With teams not allowed to officially sign free agents until Friday, the roster is sure to be in flux until Golden State opens the regular season at home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 25.

Even after that, there’s no guarantee.

“It’s just different,” Curry said. “It’s a good possibility there’s going to be some new faces in here after training camp all the way up until Christmas.”

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)

Stephen Curry woke up Wednesday morning to a flurry of text messages from friends and family back home wondering about the trade talk surrounding the Golden State Warriors point guard.

”Seven text messages saying `Hornets, question mark,”’ Curry said, chuckling.

With the latest round of NBA chatter surrounding the point guard, Curry said that he has been told by Warriors general manager Larry Riley and new coach Mark Jackson that he is ”safe and secure” with the only franchise he has ever known.

”They want me here,” Curry said. ”Obviously, there’s the business of basketball and there are things that may happen with a GM having to make a decision for the best interest of the team.
Nov 28, 2011 – The NBA lockout is over at long last, and the season will get underway less than one month from now, meaning that the Golden State Warriors will begin gearing up and looking forward to the impending season. Details have been released as to the specifics of the shortened season’s schedule, via NBA.com.

The season will open on December 25, 2011, and run until April 26, 2012.

The 2011-2012 NBA Playoffs are slated to kick off on April 28, 2012, with a latest possible date for the end of the Finals coming on June 26.

The season, as previously announced, will be 66 games, with each team playing 48 in-conference games and 18 non-conference games. The full breakdown of these games is as follows:

Conference Games: 48

• Play 6 teams 4 times (2 home, 2 away)

• Play 4 teams 3 times (2 home, 1 away)

• Play 4 teams 3 times (1 home, 2 away)

Non-Conference Games: 18

• Play 3 teams 2 times (1 home, 1 away)

• Play 6 teams 1 time at home

• Play 6 teams 1 time away

Back to Back to Backs: All teams with at least 1; no more than 3

Playoff Back to Backs: Possible in second round

The end result could mean a potentially more exciting and hectic NBA season. With only 66 games, each individual game will mean that much more toward the final standings. Who knows? It could even be the key to the Warriors earning a playoff berth. It will also be interesting if the Finals end up pushing toward the thick of the summer.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Kids from East Oakland are getting some lessons about life this summer from a former Golden State Warriors player. "You can't do anything in life if you can't listen

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) —
Kids from East Oakland are getting some lessons about life this summer from a former Golden State Warriors player.

“You can’t do anything in life if you can’t listen. You have to listen,” said former Warrior Adonal Foyle to the kids.

Foyle is running more than just a basketball camp at the East Oakland Youth Development Center. Girls compete head on against boys and no one has an easy ride. Foyle say the goal is not to create the next basketball star, but to build strong minded, respectful young people.

“They are the future leaders that we’re going to count on and they have to learn character. So I push them, they do pushups for anything I don’t like. So they get stronger hopefully at the end of the three days,” said Foyle.

The camp teaches the kids about finances, like how to balance a checkbook and cooking and nutrition lessons.

Even as the lockout continues to throw a wrench in the plans of NBA players, NBA teams are still conducting business throught the summer. The latest news coming out of Golden State Warriors camp is that longtime Washington Wizards assistant Wes Unseld Jr. is leaving his position in D.C. to join the new look staff of the W’s as an assistant coach to Mark Jackson.

Son of Bullets legend Wes Unseld, Unseld Jr. has been with the Wiz since he graduated from John Hopkins in 1997, working his way up the ranks from an advance scout to an assistant on former coach Eddie Jordan’s staff. After Jordan’s departure Ed Tapscott kept Unseld Jr. on his staff, as well as Flip Saunders when he took over in 2009.

Unseld Jr. interviewed for an assistant position with the Lakers after his contract expired at the end of June, but decided to take a job on the bench next to Mark Jackson instead along with recently hired assistant Mike Malone.

When it became clear that Golden State could acquire big man Jeremy Tyler, Warriors assistant general manager Bob Myers stood up in the team’s draft room and spoke up.

Myers has known Tyler for years, since he was a middle school phenom in San Diego. Myers felt compelled to issue one last reminder to coach Mark Jackson.

“I said, ‘Mark, you’ve got to coach this guy,’ ” said Myers. “He said, ‘Let’s get him.’”

Assistant coach Michael Malone then asked: “Is he good? Is he big?”

“He’s good and big,” Myers responded. “But you’ve got to keep him on a leash a little bit.”

After that, Golden State agreed to send $2 million to Charlotte in exchange for the No. 39 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, which the Bobcats used to select Tyler for the Warriors. In doing so, Golden State added some serious excitement to its draft.

Tyler — 20 years old and 6-foot-10, 260 pounds — was a first-round talent with some issues, which is why he was available in round two. He’s known for being a gifted athlete with all the tools to become a special NBA big man. He’s also been known for being immature, making poor decisions and having a questionable work ethic.

Golden State will introduce Tyler on Monday, along with first-round pick Klay Thompson and second-rounder Charles Jenkins.

“Doing the deal to acquire the rights to Jeremy Tyler was an aggressive move,” said Warriors general manager Larry Riley. “Jeremy is a person of size both in

height and bulk and is a young, athletic player. We will certainly be in a developmental situation with him, but I do think he is an NBA talent.”

Tyler has been pegged as an NBA talent since he was in the eighth grade. Some say that’s what gave him the personality flaws that made him so hard to deal with as a teenager.

He has had a filmmaker following him around since his sophomore year in high school, making a documentary. He’s had shoe companies, agents and hangers-on putting in their bids before he’d taken algebra.

After his junior season at San Diego High in 2009, when he was touted by many as the top high school player in the nation, Tyler decided to skip the 12th grade and play pro ball in Israel. It was a move set up by AAU basketball honcho Sonny Vaccaro, and it caused a national debate. Tyler became the first American basketball player to leave high school early to go pro. He signed a two-year, $140,000 contract with Maccabi Haifa after agreeing to play collegiately at Louisville.

Israel didn’t go so well.

Tyler appeared in 10 games, averaging just 7.6 minutes. Or, as the Haaretz Daily newspaper in Tel Aviv reported, “Tyler averaged about two points, two rebounds and two temper tantrums a game.”

After run-ins with his coach and teammates, Tyler — who was alone in Israel at 18 — returned home.

“All he had to do was go and do what Brandon (Jennings) did, shut up and go learn,” Vaccaro, an adviser to Tyler and Jennings, told the New York Times in a 2009 article on Tyler. “He obviously isn’t doing that. He thinks that he’s Kevin Garnett.”

(Jennings played for a year in Europe after graduating high school and was picked 10th by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2009 NBA draft.)

Tyler played in Japan this past season for the Tokyo Apache, coached by former NBA head coach Bob Hill. It was under Hill that Tyler started to show signs of maturity and progress, on the court and off.

Tyler averaged 9.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game with the Apache. The season was suspended in March because of the catastrophic earthquake in Japan, but in his last game, Tyler totaled 24 points and 11 rebounds in 23 minutes.

“In Japan, he was able to keep his NBA flame alive,” said Tyler’s agent, Mahktar N’Diaye, who played at North Carolina and had a cup of coffee in the NBA. “We all know Bob Hill is passionate. Because he had been an NBA coach, Jeremy felt he was somebody he could listen to.”

N’diaye said Tyler looks at Jackson the same way. Riley said the Warriors are planning to put at least a couple years into Tyler, so his roster spot is pretty secure. The Warriors are thirsty enough for size, rebounding and inside scoring to take a chance, especially considering the struggles of starting center Andris Biedrins.

Tyler could be just what the Warriors need: a big man who plays big but can run the floor and finish with authority, and who can protect the basket and bang inside.

“The No. 1 thing he definitely will bring is toughness,” said Warriors small forward Dorell Wright, adding that he’s played with Tyler during the summer for several years. “He’s still very young and raw. He has a lot of room to get better. He plays hard and is willing to work. I worked out every day with the kid, so I know he will fit in well for us.”

Myers said the first thing Tyler asked was when he could come to Oakland and begin working out. N’diaye said Tyler was frustrated he didn’t go in the first round and is bent on making the teams that passed him up pay.

“Everybody said this a great kid that needs direction and has tremendous upside,” Jackson said. “I’m excited about what lies ahead for this young man. He couldn’t have fallen into a better situation.

“I want to be not just a coach to this young man. I want to be a mentor. I want to be a father figure. I want to be somebody he understands he can trust and grow with. I want to give him every opportunity to succeed.”

Monta Ellis could be traded this summer.

The Orlando Magic are one of a handful of teams who’ve spoken to the Golden State Warriors about acquiring Monta Ellis, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Based on comments from new team consultant Jerry West last week, it appears the Warriors are looking to split up the guard duo of Ellis and Stephen Curry, who aren’t a very good complement because they’re both undersized and both like the ball in their hands.

That puts Ellis, a 25-year-old who averaged 24.1 points last season, on the trading block, and he’s receiving plenty of interest. Rusty Simmons of the Chronicle, citing league sources, said the Warriors have discussed trades with Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando and the Lakers. The league’s hottest rumor involves Ellis being traded to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala straight up.

Ellis’ inefficiency and lack of defensive performance doesn’t make him a perfect fit in Orlando, but his ability to create shots is something the Magic sorely lack. As a pure scorer, he’s one of the ten best perimeter players in the NBA.

The Magic’s most valuable trading asset, Jameer Nelson, offers little value to the Warriors because of Curry, but the Warriors could potentially have interest in one of the Magic’s young role players. While the other teams linked to the Warriors could all offer more than the Magic, it’s unclear if they want to.

If the Ellis-for-Iguodala swap falls through, this will certainly be a situation to monitor.

Golden State's Monta Ellis might be traded this summer. (Gary W

Golden State’s Monta Ellis might be traded this summer. (Gary W. Green/Orlando Sentinel)

The Golden State Warriors recently brought in Jerry West as a consultant, and West’s comments seem to insinuate that the team is looking to deal Monta Ellis.

“I’ve seen teams trade players that score tons of points and people say, ‘How in the world can you trade that player?’ ” West said last week, according to Tim Kawakami. “Because he might score tons of points and the team doesn’t win.

“When I look at (the Warriors), obviously they need more size.”

Kawakami, who writes about the Warriors for the San Jose Mercury News, believes West has already begun exploring trade partners.

Ellis, 25, averaged 24.1 points per game for the Warriors last season, good for ninth in the NBA. But Ellis’ scoring ability and ball domination overlap with the skill-set of Warriors point guard Steph Curry, who’s younger, cheaper and a better distributor.

So, do the Magic have the assets to land Ellis?

The Warriors need size, as West said, because they don’t have much in the frontcourt past David Lee. And Kawakami speculated the Warriors will deal for a “tough wing,” perhaps suggesting the Warriors will look into trading for Philly’s Andre Iguodala, who also may be on the move.

In terms of size, neither Ryan Anderson nor Brandon Bass would benefit the Warriors beyond Lee’s talents at power forward. It’d be a reach to classify Hedo Turkoglu as a “tough wing,” and the Warriors wouldn’t be interested in his contract anyhow. J.J. Redick might hold some value, however, as he’d form a healthy yet defense-deficient backcourt alongside Curry.

The best deal the Magic could put together — and this is purely speculation — is something like J.J. Redick, Brandon Bass and a first-round pick for Ellis.

Assuming other teams covet Ellis, that’s probably not the best offer the Warriors would see, at least on paper. Chicago and Memphis — the two teams Kawakami linked to the Warriors in his column — could certainly offer more if they felt so inclined.

But there’s more to it than what’s on paper. Ellis’ quick shooting trigger and lack of past team success will scare some teams from pursuing him, and the Warriors’ perceived willingness to deal him may diminish his value.

His ability on offense would give the Magic they lacked last season: An aggressive, elite wing scorer. He’s not the most efficient offensive player in the league, but he’s certainly improved with age. I mentioned him last week in a column about who the Magic could potentially pursue.

Well, he’s out there now. Do the Magic have enough to get him?
