Granger's 25 lead Pacers past Warriors

By CLIFF BRUNT
AP Sports Writer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Danny Granger scored 25 points to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Golden State Warriors 102-78 Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Tyler Hansbrough scored 15 points and Roy Hibbert added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who remained in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers topped 100 points for the fourth straight game after doing so just six times before the current stretch.

Monta Ellis and Brandon Rush each scored 14 points for the Warriors, who finished with season lows in points and field-goal percentage (.341).

Golden State guard Stephen Curry sat out with a strained tendon in his right foot. The Warriors missed the 45-percent 3-point shooter – they made just 1 of 17 3s in the first three quarters.

Indiana shut down the league’s No. 5 scoring offense, which had averaged 99.2 points per game.

The Pacers led 52-38 at halftime as Golden State posted its second-lowest point total in a first half this season.

A 3-pointer by Paul George early in the second half pushed Indiana’s lead to 57-40, and a reverse layup by Granger upped the margin to 19. A free throw by George gave Indiana a 20-point lead for the first time, and a putback dunk by Hibbert on a miss by Granger forced the Warriors to call timeout.

Golden State missed four of its first five shots after halftime to fall behind 62-40. A 3-point play by Granger pushed Indiana’s lead to 77-47.

Granger scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting in the third quarter. The Pacers shot 12-for-19 as a team in the period while holding the Warriors to 7-for-21 shooting.

George had 11 points and nine rebounds, Darren Collison scored 11 points and David West had 10 points and seven boards for the Pacers.

___

NOTES: Warriors coach Mark Jackson, a former Pacers player, was cheered loudly during pregame introductions. … Indiana took a 10-0 lead early as Golden State missed its first nine shots. … Ellis made a bank shot as time expired at the end of the first quarter to cut Indiana’s lead to 24-21. … Ellis shot 1-for-6 in the second half. .. Charles Jenkins, who started for Golden State in place of Stephen Curry, scored two points on 0-for-5 shooting. … Indiana G George Hill had two points on 1-for-6 shooting in his second game back from a chip fracture in left ankle.

Golden State Warriors have much work to do to…

The Warriors have some catching up to do in the season’s second half if they are to make good on preseason playoff promises made by owner Joe Lacob and coach Mark Jackson.

“If we’re a healthy team, we’ve got a chance to beat anyone,” forward David Lee said. “Unfortunately, we have a chance to lose to anybody, too. We’re not a really consistent team right now. … We’ve made strides. We’ve just got to continue to do what we’ve been doing lately.”

Tuesday at Indiana, the start of a five-game trip, the Warriors open the second half of the season hoping to pull off the improbable. Making the playoffs would require defying their inconsistent play thus far and overcoming a difficult remaining schedule.

The Warriors have an NBA-high 36 games remaining, including 21 on the road. They won one-third of their road games in the first half.

The Warriors (13-17) have a few things working against them, in addition to the road-heavy schedule.

The biggest concern is the health of point guard Stephen Curry, whose sprained right foot caused him to miss practice Monday.

Even if everyone is healthy, Golden State still has to contend with a dozen back-to-back sets, including a three-games-in-three-nights stint. And two-thirds of the Warriors games are against teams currently .500 or better.

“We fully understand what we have to do to be successful,” Jackson said. “Now is an opportunity for us to take what we’ve learned in the first half

and to build on it.”

Of course, you could find a few reasons to believe a playoff run is possible.

The Warriors closed the first half winning five of eight, including a clutch victory at Phoenix just before the All-Star break.

The win over the Suns gave them a jolt of confidence heading into the break. How they won it — coming out on top in a close game, getting a game-winner by Monta Ellis and a few crucial defensive stops — gave them hope they are turning things around.

“It’s much better for our future to grind out a win,” Jackson said. “We buckled down and were disciplined enough to come out of there with a win.”

If the Warriors have finally started to click, they don’t have that much ground to make up, because the playoff contenders of the Western Conference haven’t separated themselves.

The Warriors sit just three games behind Portland, which currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot. They are just five games behind the No. 5 seed. Any winning streak of length and Golden State could be right in the thick of things.

The front office figures to also have a final say. If Golden State produces on this trip, management might have incentive to get help by the March 15 trade deadline. Several short-term options might be available to aid a Warriors surge.

And if that’s not enough, faint memories of “We Believe” may prevent some fans from completely giving up hope.

What do you guys think about this.

Warriors' Curry Dealing With Ailing Foot

By SportsDirect

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is dealing with a sprained deltoid ligament in his right foot. An MRI on Sunday revealed the injury, but Curry is hoping to play through the pain. “I’m hopeful I can play Tuesday,” Curry told the San Jose Mercury News. “It feels better. Rehab is going well. Just have to see how it responds the next couple of days. I’m confident I won’t miss much time, if any.” Curry suffered the injury on a layup during Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns.

Gotta run!.

Golden State Warriors Plan to Send Rookie Jeremy…

The Golden State Warriors have used the All-Star break as a way to rest up and recover for the second half of the season.

Stephen Curry sat out of the Taco Bell Skills Challenge after winning last year. Surprisingly, zero representatives from the Warriors, who have some of the most-accurate three-point shooters in the league thus far, participated in the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest that was eventually won by Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Kevin Love. Monta Ellis, the team’s best chance at an All-Star representative this season, is at home instead of playing in the All-Star game in Orlando.

With hopes of having a much better second half of the season, the Warriors are planning to send rookie Jeremy Tyler to their Developmental League affiliate Dakota Wizards after the All-Star break, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Little was expected out of Tyler this season. After spending two years overseas in Israel and Japan, the young center from San Diego was drafted with the 39th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats, acquired by the Warriors for cash considerations, and was viewed as a developmental project for the team.

Even with injuries to Andris Biedrins and Kwame Brown during the season and little depth at the center position, coach Mark Jackson has chosen not to play the inexperienced rookie. At the halfway point, Tyler has played in just 14 of the team’s 30 games and has only put up significant minutes in one big loss (15 minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 27). Needless to say, Tyler has had little impact on the team’s successes and failures this season.

This move makes sense given the little playing time Tyler received while on the roster. Like former D-League roster member Chris Wright, Tyler will receive a sizeable increase in minutes and continue to get valuable playing experience. Since the Wizards are the Warriors’ personal affiliate, the staff in Dakota will be able to work with his strengths and weaknesses to the team’s liking for an eventual recall to the NBA roster.

Given the Warriors’ spot in the standings right now, Tyler may see more minutes with the team down the line if they are too far out of playoff contention near the end of the season. This move could also make way for a new signing if the Warriors decide to bring on a veteran free agent or a promising D-League prospect.

Since adding a new player at this point of the season seems unlikely and the roster will probably stay set for the rest of the season, the Warriors will likely rely on Ekpe Udoh and Dominic McGuire to backup Biedrins and David Lee in a thin Warriors frontcourt.

Steve Nash had a lovely game as the Phoenix Suns’ offense broke out for a win over the Golden State Warriors.

Jan 3, 2012 – The Phoenix Suns, known primarily for their offense since Steve Nash arrived in 2004, had struggled on that end this season. But all the Suns needed was a matinee against the Golden State Warriors, which is just what they got on Monday. The Suns beat the Warriors 102-91 as Nash roared with 21 points on 9-13 shooting, nine assists and two turnovers.

The Suns’ 102 points came in 91 possessions for an offensive rating of 112. The Warriors had appeared to be improving on defense under rookie head coach Mark Jackson, but that progress took a fall on Monday. Suns rookie Markieff Morris racked up 16 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.

Monta Ellis led the Warriors with 16 points on 6-16 shooting with 11 assists, five rebounds and three turnovers. Stephen Curry scored 10 points, but played just 23 minutes due to foul trouble. David Lee was inactive, forcing Jackson to start Dominic McGuire at foward with Dorell Wright.

The Suns and Warriors are now each 2-3.

Golden State Warriors Win Second in a Row, Down…

Stephen Curry wasn’t playing. The New York Knicks – that famous franchise featuring a starting line-up of Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler – was in town. Oh, and did I mention Stephen Curry wasn’t playing? How were my hometown Golden State Warriors going to win this one?

Apparently, they were going to do it with defense.

That’s right, for the second time in three days, the Golden State Warriors won a game because of tight, solid D, this one against the Knicks by a score of 92-78. I know. I’m in shock about it too.

When Mark Jackson was appointed coach not too long ago, the point guard legend – who wasn’t a particularly strong defender mind you – stressed that we were going to be seeing a different style of Warriors basketball than we were used to. Gone would be the days of the run-and-gun offense and 140-139 score-lines. It was time to slow the ball down, run a half-court set, and, much to everyone’s surprise, players would actually be required to get back and show some defensive intensity. Goodbye Phoenix Suns, hello San Antonio Spurs.

Look, I realize the season is only three games old, and there’s no guarantee that the W’s will keep this up, but Warriors fans are excited about what they’ve seen the last few days, and they should be.

I was at the Oracle Arena last night, and while it’s always a fantastic place to watch a game (a “great time out” as the old ads used to say), there was a different kind of energy in the building. It was sort of like the fans were realizing that the Warriors were going to grind out a win against a team with two elite scorers, and that it wasn’t because they scored a zillion points while luckily giving up one less. The W’s deserved this win, and it was a win to be proud of.

A few quick observations from last night’s contest:

  • Brandon Rush, (and also Dominic McGuire, but more so Rush), is the perfect fit for this team. The Warriors got this guy for Lou Amundson? Really? The former Kansas star scored big buckets and played tight D, and he really looks like he’s going to make a home for himself in Golden State.
  • Monta Ellis shook off a terrible first half and really shined in the second, even without Curry in the back-court. He facilitated beautifully down the stretch, and hit some big 3′s when it mattered. That’s what a team leader is supposed to do.
  • Some people behind me were chanting “MVP” for Monta while he was at the free throw line late in the game. A little premature for that I think. Let’s try and get the guy on an All-Star team first.
  • A great ovation for former W’s point guard Jeremy Lin when he subbed in right before the end of the game. The Bay Area native certainly remains a fan favorite.

Next, the Warriors take on the Philadelphia 76ers at home on New Year’s Eve. Can they make it three in a row?

Warriors Vs. Knicks: Monta Ellis Steps Up, Leads…

Read More: Carmelo Anthony (F – NYK), Monta Ellis (G – GSW), David Lee (F – GSW), Amare Stoudemire (F – NYK), Brandon Rush (G – GSW), Stephen Curry (G – GSW), Ish Smith (G – GSW), New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks at Golden State Warriors, Dec 28, 2011 7:30 PM PST

The Golden State Warriors had to make do without a point guard, as Stephen Curry continues to struggle with ankle issues. So why not use Monta Ellis and let him handle the ball a bit.

Ellis was four of 15 from the field in the first half, but then scored eight crucial points to break open a fairly tight contest between the Warriors and the New York Knicks. Golden State outscored New York 28-14 in the fourth quarter to break a 64-64 tie after three quarter and move onto victory. Brandon Rush had 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks, Ish Smith put in 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and David Lee had 13 points and five boards.

What was probably most impressive for the Warriors was how good Golden State looked on defense. The Warriors decisively won the rebounding battle over New York 47-31. Golden State held Carmelo Anthony to 13 points on three of 13 shooting and Amare Stoudemire to 16 points on five of 14 shooting. It was a great all-around effort by the Warriors, who can cap off a solid week by beating the Philadelphia Sixers on New Year’s Eve.

Golden State Warriors vs. New York Knicks

WARRIORS VS. NEW YORK

Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. at Oracle Arena

TV/Radio: CSNBA; NBA TV; 680-AM

Knicks update: New York showed why it is one of the top teams in the league, outlasting Boston on Christmas Day as Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points and hitting the game-winning shot. … New York claimed guard Jeremy Lin off waivers. The former Warrior and Bay Area native is needed in New York because of injuries. Toney Douglas is the only healthy point guard.

Warriors update: F Brandon Rush and C Kwame Brown figure to play key roles against the Knicks. Those two have emerged as key cogs when coach Mark Jackson goes for a bigger, more defensive lineup. … Jackson has relied mostly on Monta Ellis as the backup point guard. If starter Stephen Curry doesn’t play or is limited, that could spell big minutes for Ellis.

Knicks injuries: G Baron Davis (back) and G Iman Shumpert (knee) are out. F Jared Jeffries (calf) and G Mike Bibby (back) are questionable.

Warriors injuries: Curry (sprained right ankle) is day to day. It will be determined Wednesday if he can play.

Golden State Warriors Get First Win of Season by…

What a difference one night can make. Just 24 hours after getting blown out by the Los Angeles Clippers 105-86 to kick off their season in underwhelming fashion, the Golden State Warriors put on an absolute clinic at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on Monday night, beating the Chicago Bulls 99-91. What a way for my hometown team to get their first win of the shortened 66-game campaign, and Mark Jackson his first ever coaching victory.

As I wrote yesterday, it appears that the Warriors are going to go as Stephen Curry goes, and he most certainly went last night. After a dismal opening day performance, Curry showed flashes of the brilliant point guard we are all hoping he’ll be, putting up an amazing stat line of 21 points, ten assists, seven rebounds, and six steals, not to mention a couple of breathtaking alley-oops, including a three-quarters court toss to Dorell Wright. And that’s all with missing a large chunk of the fourth quarter after re-injuring his ankle yet again, this time after landing on Kyle Korver’s foot. (Apparently Curry is going to have to miss the Warriors’ next game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, making an already tough contest even tougher).

Jackson has been stressing that this Golden State Warriors team is going to be focused around defense, so perhaps it’s only fitting that in his first ever win, the team played great D on reigning league MVP Derrick Rose, holding him to 13 points on 4 of 17 shooting, and that they also managed to rack up 16 steals in the process. I know it’s been a while since there’s been basketball, but this was the best defensive effort that I’ve seen from a W’s team in a very, very long time.

And I’m not going to say that I’m right (it’s only been two games after all), but Kwame Brown’s performance Monday night was inspired. In 23 solid minutes off of the bench, the big man made in impact defending against the always tough Joakim Noah. And a +/- of +21? Nicely done, Kwame.

So what does it all mean? That the Warriors are going to play tough D, beat up on good Eastern Conference teams, effectively use 11 players (there is no telling the depths of Coach Jackson’s bench), and win games without scoring 100 points? Probably not. But even if this is just a one-time thing, it was great to see the W’s put together a performance that shows the potential of what this team could one day be.

Can they do it again on Wednesday without Curry against the Knicks? I’m not going to be the one who says that they can’t.

Warriors Vs. Bulls, NBA Preview: W’s Face Second…

Read More: mark jackson, oracle arena, 2011-12 nba schedule, 2011-12 nba season, Andris Biedrins (C – GSW), Monta Ellis (G – GSW), David Lee (F – GSW), Brandon Rush (G – GSW), Stephen Curry (G – GSW), Klay Thompson (G – GSW), Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors, Dec 26, 2011 7:30 PM PST

The Golden State Warriors hung tough withe the Los Angeles Clippers for the majority of Christmas night, but fell silent down the stretch, eventually losing Mark Jackson’s first game as an NBA coach. Now the W’s have to refocus themselves for a meeting with the ever so dangerous Chicago Bulls, who are fresh off their nail-biting win over the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday themselves.

Andris Biedrins and David Lee were taking care of business the majority of the night down low, but it was the backcourt that struggled against the Clip Show as a hobbled Stephen Curry finished with more turnovers (5) than points (4) while Monta Ellis went 6-19 from the field, something Golden State will have to improve this evening. Hopefully they can have similar output from bench guys like Brandon Rush and rookie Klay Thompson, each scoring 12 and seven respectfully.

Golden State began Christmas night rigid on defense but folded in the second half, allowing 105 points including 65 in the second half alone. Like the Clippers, the Bulls are a high powered offense, and will prove to be another early test for Jackson and his defense-first mentality.

These two teams split their meetings last season, with each winning a game on their home court. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm PT from Oracle Arena with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry gets good…

Click photo to enlarge

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry crawls to the sideline after being injured late in the second quarter against the Sacramento Kings in an NBA preseason basketball game in Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry received some good news from Wednesday’s MRI exam on his sprained right ankle.

Tests revealed Curry didn’t sustain any ligament damage in Tuesday’s exhibition loss to Sacramento. The repairs made in his offseason surgery are still intact.

Curry will officially be listed as day to day, but it’s going to take some quick healing for him to be able to play Sunday, when the Warriors host the Los Angeles Clippers in their season opener.

“Hoping for the Christmas Miracle,” Curry said.

Curry rolled his right ankle while backpedaling to the defensive end with 46.4 seconds left in the first half. He fell to the hardwood and writhed in pain after trying to walk it off.

Curry sprained his right ankle three times last season and missed a total of eight games. He had surgery on the ankle in May to repair two ligament tears.

He spent most of the offseason rehabbing the injury before being cleared for full contact on Sept. 14.

  • The Warriors waived swingman Edwin Ubiles and guard Tommy Mitchell, leaving 14 players under contract.
