Warriors (2-2) at Suns (1-3), 1:30 tip-off

C: Andris Biedrins … Marcin Gortat

PF: David Lee … Channing Frye

SF: Dorell Wright … Grant Hill

SG: Monta Ellis … Jared Dudley

PG: Stephen Curry … Steve Nash

Key Warrriors subs: Brandon Rush, Ekpe Udoh, Ishamel Smith, Dominic McGuire, Kwame Brown, Klay Thompson.

Snacking on some Orange Slices before an early tip-off:

* Monta Ellis, averaging 21.0 points and 7.7 assists in two wins and a loss, missed Golden State’s Wednesday night loss to Philadelphia for his grandmother’s funeral in Mississippi but the Contra Costa Times’ Marcus Thompson reported this morning that Ellis has rejoined the team and will play today. Grant Hill fared well against Ellis defensively last season, including Ellis’ eight-point outing in the teams’ final meeting.

* The Warriors have lost 12 consecutive games at US Airways Center, dating back to March 2005. Golden State was 10-31 on the road last season. This is the Warriors’ first road game of the season after opening with a four-game homestand that included wins against Chicago and New York. Golden State only has won 26 road games over the last three seasons combined.

* The Suns have won six consecutive games overall against Golden State.

* The Suns rank 24th in the NBA in scoring, 24th in field goal percentage and 27th in 3-point percentage. The very thing that was supposed to give the Suns a fighting chance at the playoffs despite little roster improvement was the continuity of the team.

“Yeah, it doesn’t look that way, does it?” said Steve Nash, whose shot has been ailing due to a rib bruise.

The Suns’ offense always has operated off rhythm and perhaps they never established that without spending the time they do playing together on their own each September before training camp started. The Suns clearly are getting good shots. In the last home game, they charted that they took 11 “Grade-A” shots in the first quarter and made two.

“It’s not about anything another team does,” Frye said. “It’s about us. We’ve got to jump up and make shots and whether we’re going to stick to our defensive principles?”

* How did the Suns defense go from giving up 29.8 percent shooting, the third lowest opponent mark in franchise history, against New Orleans on Friday night to yielding 53.2 percent shooting to Oklahoma City on Saturday night? For one, the Hornets don’t have much for scoring threats without Eric Gordon and the Thunder is playing like the best team in the West. But the Suns were a different defensive team internally Saturday night against the Thunder.

“We didn’t stay within what we’re supposed to do,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “We tried to make up too much as we went along. When we do that, we can’t have any continuity because nobody knows what the next guy is doing.”

* The Suns’ best 3-point shooter this season is a rookie who looked throughout training camp like maybe he should hold off on adding it to his repertoire. But Gentry kept encouraging Markieff Morris to shoot and the Suns have another stretch power forward to show for it.

Morris is 5 for 9 on 3s after going 3 for 4 in the Saturday loss. That included a fourth-quarter bank shot.

“I actually tried to shoot it off the backboard,” Morris said. “I called bank. I don’t know if you heard me.”

Morris also has the team’s third best rebounding rate (18 rebounds in 68 minutes) behind Gortat and Frye.

* Frye is not the only notorious proficient 3-point shooter who has opened the season on a cold streak. Wright sank 194 3s last season in his first year with Golden State but is 3 for 17 (17.6 percent) in the first four games this season. Like Phoenix, Golden State has struggled from 3-point range as a team (27.5 percent).

* The Suns and Warriors both emphasized a defensive culture change with offseason coaching hires — lead assistant Elston Turner for Phoenix and new head coach Mark Jackson for Golden State. It would have made for a nice turnaround with the teams if their offenses had not become polar-opposites of their past. Golden State (89.0) and Phoenix (89.3) rank as the sixth and seventh lowest scoring offenses in the league.

* Michael Redd is joining the Suns today to begin working out with the team. He likely is at least a week away from playing.

(Sports Network) – The Golden State Warriors haven’t had the best of luck
playing in the desert and hope the new year will bring some better fortunes.
The Warriors will try to snap a lengthy losing streak at Phoenix when they
visit the Suns this afternoon at US Airways Center.

The Warriors have dropped six in a row to the Suns and are winless in the last
12 meetings as the visitor in this series. They haven’t won in Phoenix since a
110-100 victory back on March 18, 2005.

Golden State went 2-2 on a season-opening four-game homestand and will play
three straight games on the road against the Suns, Spurs and Lakers. In
Saturdays 107-79 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at Oracle Arena, Stephen
Curry led the way with 21 points, while David Lee added 19 with eight
rebounds, as Golden State had its two-game win streak snapped.

The Warriors were playing without leading scorer Monta Ellis, who was excused
from the team on Friday to attend his grandmother’s funeral in Mississippi.
Ellis is probable for tonight for Golden State, which blew a 20-7 lead early
on against the 76ers.

“We had an opportunity to come out and put our foot on the gas pedal at that
point. When we didn’t, we let them back in the game and they hit a lot of
shots and that turned into a lot of easy possessions,” said Curry.

Phoenix has lost three of four to start the season and is 0-2 at home.

The Suns are coming off Saturdays 107-97 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder,
as Markieff Morris and Hakim Warrick paced the Suns with 15 points apiece,
while Jared Dudley added 14 points and five boards and Marcin Gortat netted 12
points to go with six rebounds for Phoenix.

“We did not defend the way we wanted to,” Suns forward Channing Frye said.
“Their guys made shots early and we did not. I think we are very inconsistent
on offense right now and I guess that just comes with trust and time. We have
to grind it out.”

The Suns were coming off their first win of the season, a 93-78 victory over
New Orleans. They hope to avoid losing three in a row at home to start a
season since the 2005-06 campaign.

In his younger days, Warriors forward Dorell Wright said he would be much more bothered by shooting 17.6 percent from 3-point range over the season’s first four games. But Wright, in his eighth season, said he has no doubt he will return to being Golden State’s 3-point specialist.

“It’s a matter of time,” Wright said. “I’m going to get hot, and everybody will forget about this little four-game stretch or however long it lasts. … In due time, my shot will be back.”

Last season, Wright proved to be one of the league’s best signings. In his first season with the Warriors, he knocked down 194 3-pointers. In his previous six seasons, Wright totaled 73 from behind the arc.

Wright’s 3-point shooting became one of the most reliable components of the Warriors offense last season. But that’s a luxury Golden State hasn’t had this season. He’s missed 14 of the 17 he’s taken.

Since much of his offensive game is based on his 3-pointer, Wright hasn’t been able to get much of anything going offensively. He’s averaging 8.3 points (half what he averaged last season) on 34.3 percent shooting. Saturday, when the Warriors needed offense with guard Monta Ellis out, Wright totaled four points on 2-for-10 shooting.

With Wright not knocking down his 3-pointers (the Warriors are shooting 27.5 percent from deep), opposing defenses are not paying a price for packing in the lane. With no big man to create offense, the Warriors rely on outside shooting

to open up the paint so Ellis & Co. can penetrate.

“It helps when he makes the shot because it’s another weapon that they’ve got to protect and work against,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said of Wright. “When he makes that shot, it’s more breathing room for everybody else on the floor. So we certainly need it.”

So what’s wrong with Wright’s shot?

He said it boils down to mechanics. He said usually when he misses, he knows exactly what’s wrong.

To fix it, Wright said he’s shooting more before and after practice. He also said he hired someone to break down game film of his shooting so he can study his mechanics.

But mostly, to get out of his slump, Wright said he is focusing on defense. After all, that’s what Wright hung his hat on before joining the Warriors last summer.

“To tell you the truth, I really don’t care about the offensive end,” Wright said. “It’s not like that anymore around here. It’s not like if you can’t score 15, 16 points you’re coming out the game. … Whatever I’m contributing is a plus.”

It’s doubtful Jackson would go that far. Golden State is 26th in the NBA in points per game at 89.0 — more than 14 points below last season’s average. The Warriors rank 21st in field goal percentage (42.2).

Especially for the upcoming three-game road trip, Golden State needs Wright to get going on offense.

What do you guys think about this.

The New York Knicks head out on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night (Dec. 28)

The New York Knicks head out on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night (Dec. 28). It’s a tough game because of the depth and youth that the Warriors have on their side, but a good aspect of this match-up is that Stephen Curry may miss the game with an injury.

Curry is one of the best young guards in the NBA, but he is down with an injured ankle that he suffered in the preseason and then re-aggravated. Curry averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 assists as the point guard for the Warriors last season and was looking to improve upon those numbers. He played in the first two games for the Warriors this season, averaging 12.5 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, so having him out of the game really helps New York. There is a chance he feels better by game time, but even if he plays, Curry will have limited mobility.

For the Knicks, this is a great chance to prove something to the rest of the league. Having a road trip to the West Coast this early in the season is a tough endeavor, with games against Golden State Wednesday (Dec. 28), the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday (Dec. 29) and the Sacramento Kings on Saturday (Dec. 31). Hopefully it’s a test that the team can pass, and that by the end of December the Knicks are sitting in first place with a 4-0 record.

The Knicks are also still trying to figure things out with a host of new players this season. Guard Mike Bibby is back in the lineup and should provide some minutes off the bench and that is extremely important with Iman Shumpert out due to an injury he suffered in the first game.

The starters for the Knicks are point guard Toney Douglas, shooting guard Landry Fields, small forward Carmelo Anthony, power forward Amare Stoudemire and center Tyson Chandler. For the Warriors, the starters could shift if Curry is unable to play. The most likely scenario is that Monta Ellis shifts to point guard and Brandon Rush joins the starting lineup as the shooting guard. Starting at small forward is Dorell Wright, at power forward is David Lee and at center is Andris Biedrins.

The Warriors are averaging 92.5 points per game while giving up 98 per game through the first two opponents. The team has posted a 1-1 record and is grabbing 42 rebounds per night. New York scored 106 points in the game against the Boston Celtics and gave up 104 points. The team only managed 31 rebounds though, making the Knicks the worst rebounding team in the NBA so far. Hopefully that can change a bit on Wednesday night.

Anthony is also the leading scorer in the NBA with 37 points per game and Chandler is second in blocks at 6 per game. Those are just stats from one game and the Knicks hope they can get duplicated on Wednesday night. Start time is at 10:30 p.m. ET and the game is on NBA TV for fans to watch.

On Tuesday, December 6, 2011, the NBA announced the revised 66-game regular season for all NBA teams. Games this year will start on Christmas, finish on April 26, which is a little later than usual, and the playoffs will last from April 28 until the latest June 26. For the Golden State Warriors, the team has been dealt an interesting abbreviated schedule this season.

Opening series

Recently, the Warriors were added to the Christmas Opening Day slate of games with a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on ESPN. For new Warriors head coach Mark Jackson, he will benefit from the supportive home crowd at Oracle Arena with four games against the Clippers, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers before coaching his first road game against the Phoenix Suns on January 2.

Only one back-to-back-to-back series

As a part of the new agreement, each team is required to play on three consecutive nights at least once during the season. For the Warriors, they will only have to worry about this burden once against the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Unfortunately, the team will have this crucial series on the road and near the end of the season (April 20-22), meaning these games may affect whether or not the team makes the playoffs this season.

A visiting (or returning) Chris Paul(notes) to New Orleans

The Warriors have been involved in many major free agent and trade talks this offseason with the likes of Tyson Chandler(notes), Marc Gasol(notes), David West(notes), DeAndre Jordan(notes), and others. However, no talks have been more important and series than those involving a trade for New Orleans Hornets point guard Paul. Whether or not the Warriors make a trade for one of the best players in the NBA, two of the Warriors’ games against the Hornets take place during an eight-day span in March could feature some homecoming games for Paul, Stephen Curry(notes), Ekpe Udoh(notes), and any other players that are involved in this possible trade.

All NBA marquee Eastern Conference teams are coming to Oakland

With an abbreviated schedule, the Warriors will only play 18 games against Eastern Conference teams. Fortunately for Warriors fans, the team will play their lone games against the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Knicks, and Orlando Magic at home this season.

Seventeen nationally-televised games

The Warriors are expected to play on national television 17 times this season, including six games on ESPN, four games on TNT, and seven games on NBA TV. Some of the big games on national TV include a game versus the Magic on January 12 and the team’s final two games of the season against the Hornets and San Antonio Spurs on TNT.

For the first time in franchise history, the Golden State Warriors Opening Night game will be nationally televised as part of a five-game schedule to tip off the 2011-2012 NBA season.

For the first time in franchise history, the Golden State Warriors Opening Night game will be nationally televised as part of a five-game schedule to tip off the 2011-2012 NBA season. Set for a 7:30 p.m. PT tipoff on ESPN, Mark Jackson will debut as the new Warriors head coach against Blake Griffin(notes) and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Back when the regular season was set to start at the beginning of November, the NBA was planning to have its typical Christmas Day tripleheader featuring the Boston Celtics at the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat at the Dallas Mavericks, and the Chicago Bulls at the Los Angeles Lakers. However, after coming to a tentative agreement for a new labor deal on Saturday, Nov. 26, the league decided to include this Warriors nightcap matchup following a game featuring the Orlando Magic at the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After taking the Golden State job over the summer, Jackson, a former television personality for NBA games on ESPN, will be front and center on national TV for his coaching debut. With little time to prepare with players like Monta Ellis(notes), Stephen Curry(notes), and David Lee(notes), Jackson may struggle initially in regards to building rapport and implementing his offensive and defensive philosophies with his team. As with any new coaching regime, Jackson may experience some growing pains with his team, as he will be pressed for the time during the league’s abbreviated preseason.

Even though the team currently has 12 players on the roster (assuming the team signs Klay Thompson(notes), Jeremy Tyler(notes), and Charles Jenkins(notes) to rookie contracts) and will not need to sign too many free agents to fill up their roster, there is still much uncertainty regarding the state of the Warriors roster on Opening Night. With a little more than three weeks left before the start of the season, Warriors general manager Larry Riley and company have been contemplating plenty of free agent options, the amnesty clause, and possible trades. If the Warriors end up signing former Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler(notes), their No. 1 offseason free agent target, or other big men like New Orleans Hornets power forward David West(notes) or Denver Nuggets center Nene, the team will certainty need to make several more moves before the start of the season.

While there is sure to be some nerves in Jackson and the rest of the players, the team does have history on its side. Last year on Christmas Night, the Warriors defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 109-102 to end a six-game Christmas Night losing streak that started back in 1971. While that can be seen as good news for the Warriors, all eyes around the country will be on Jackson, seeing if he has what it takes to be a successful NBA head coach.

Although the NBA is dealing with an ugly lockout situation right now, that didn’t stop them from releasing the 2011-2012 NBA regular season schedule three weeks early. Maybe David Stern felt it would sufficiently distract people from the reality of the situation. Whatever the case, if the season does start on time, the Golden State Warriors 2011-2012 schedule gets off to quite a bang. The Mark Jackson era will start with a home opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on ESPN on November 2.

The Warriors schedule will feature a pair of six-game road trips and nine separate appearances on ESPN or TNT. Throw in eight NBA TV appearances and it seems like the NBA is excited to showcase the new Mark Jackson Warriors.

For folks looking at potentially getting some sort of season ticket package for the upcoming season, the Warriors will face a host of interesting teams throughout the season. After opening with the Lakers, the Sacramento Kings will come to town on November 4. If the Warriors take to Mark Jackson’s commitment to defense, they will get a strong test from an explosive Kings offense. The Kings might not be able to defend to save their life, but they’ll be a high scoring team this season.

The Warriors will host Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder twice, on November 30 and February 7. They’ll host the Boston Celtics on March 14. They’ll also face the defending champion Dallas Mavericks at Oracle Arena on March 10 and April 12. They wrap up their season with a pair of games with the LA Clippers going to LA on April 14 and coming back home April 18. Maybe those games will actually have some playoff meaning? Might as well get hopes up now.

OAKLAND, Calif., June 7 (UPI) — New Golden State Warriors Coach Mark Jackson moved quickly to start putting his staff together, hiring Mike Malone away from New Orleans.

Jackson was named the team’s head coach Monday and before the night was over Malone had already agreed to become his lead assistant, a team source told the Oakland Tribune Tribune. Hornets Coach Monty Williams confirmed Malone was headed to Golden State, the newspaper said.

The team didn’t reveal the terms of the contract it reached with Jackson, an ABC broadcaster who spent 17 years in the NBA as a player.

Jackson, 46, played for New York (twice), the Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana (twice), Denver, Toronto, Utah and Houston. He ranks third on the NBA’s all-time assists list (10,334) and was an all-star in 1989.

“After an extensive search and a great deal of consideration, we have come to the conclusion that Mark Jackson is the best coach for this team,” Warriors General Manager Larry Riley said in a statement on the team’s Web site.”He will bring a youthful and fresh approach to our team and the fact that he enjoyed a stellar playing career, where he served most of that time as the leader of some very successful teams, will prove invaluable in the long run.”

Jackson said he is “really elated” to become a coach and is “looking forward to the challenge of building the Warriors into a perennial contender.”

Jackson replaces Keith Smart, who led the Warriors for one year. Golden State hasn’t made the playoffs for four years.

The Tribune said Malone passed up a chance to become Los Angeles Lakers Coach Mike Brown’s top assistant.

Under Malone’s tutelage this season, the Hornets ranked fifth in the NBA in points allowed, improving from 102.7 points a game last season to 94.04 this season. He spent the previous five seasons with Cleveland.

“Monta Ellis, a fierce competitor. He competes his fanny off every night. Love to watch him play. But to me, size helps. Size helps.”

The Warriors have David Lee, Andris Biedrins and young Ekpe Udoh up front. Lee was the first high-dollar acquisition of the Joe Lacob era, but saw his numbers slip in his first season away from the New York Knicks. Udoh was limited by injury until midway through the season, but showed defensive promise in February and March. Biedrins has been a massive disappointment since signing a $60 million contract extension three years ago.
