In his younger days, Warriors forward Dorell Wright said he would be much more bothered by shooting 17.6 percent from 3-point range over the season’s first four games. But Wright, in his eighth season, said he has no doubt he will return to being Golden State’s 3-point specialist.

“It’s a matter of time,” Wright said. “I’m going to get hot, and everybody will forget about this little four-game stretch or however long it lasts. “? In due time, my shot will be back.”

Last season, Wright proved to be one of the league’s best signings. In his first season with the Warriors, he knocked down 194 3-pointers. In his previous six seasons, Wright totaled 73 from behind the arc.

Wright’s 3-point shooting became one of the most reliable components of the Warriors offense last season. But that’s a luxury Golden State hasn’t had this season. He’s missed 14 of the 17 he’s taken.

Since much of his offensive game is based on his 3-pointer, Wright hasn’t been able to get much of anything going offensively. He’s averaging 8.3 points (half what he averaged last season) on 34.3 percent shooting. Saturday, when the Warriors needed offense with guard Monta Ellis out, Wright totaled four points on 2-for-10 shooting.

With Wright not knocking down his 3-pointers (the Warriors are shooting 27.5 percent from deep), opposing defenses are not paying a price for packing in the lane. With no big man to create offense, the

Warriors rely on outside shooting to open up the paint so Ellis & Co. can penetrate.

“It helps when he makes the shot because it’s another weapon that they’ve got to protect and work against,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said of Wright. “When he makes that shot, it’s more breathing room for everybody else on the floor. So we certainly need it.”

So what’s wrong with Wright’s shot?

He said it boils down to mechanics. He said usually when he misses, he knows exactly what’s wrong.

To fix it, Wright said he’s shooting more before and after practice. He also said he hired someone to break down game film of his shooting so he can study his mechanics.

But mostly, to get out of his slump, Wright said he is focusing on defense. After all, that’s what Wright hung his hat on before joining the Warriors last summer.

“To tell you the truth, I really don’t care about the offensive end,” Wright said. “It’s not like that anymore around here. It’s not like if you can’t score 15, 16 points you’re coming out the game. … Whatever I’m contributing is a plus.”

It’s doubtful Jackson would go that far. Golden State is 26th in the NBA in points per game at 89.0 — more than 14 points below last season’s average. The Warriors rank 21st in field goal percentage (42.2).

Especially for the upcoming three-game road trip, Golden State needs Wright to get going on offense.

That’s all the news for today.

Monta Ellis, the Golden State Warriors shooting guard and leading scorer, will miss the team’s New Years Eve game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a recent death in the family.

According to Marcus Thompson of the Contra Costa Times, Ellis’ grandmother passed away on Christmas morning and the Warriors guard is still in Mississippi with his family. Her funeral was today and he will be unable to join his teammates in time for the game. He will stay with his family on Saturday before rejoining the Warriors on Sunday in Phoenix in time to play the Suns on Sunday.

Ellis averages 21 points per game and 7.7 assists and the Warriors will have a tough time replacing him against a team that averages just over 100 points per game. Brandon Rush and Klay Thompson will likely fill in for Ellis while he’s with his family.

The Golden State Warriors had to make do without a point guard, as Stephen Curry continues to struggle with ankle issues. So why not use Monta Ellis and let him handle the ball a bit.

Ellis was four of 15 from the field in the first half, but then scored eight crucial points to break open a fairly tight contest between the Warriors and the New York Knicks. Golden State outscored New York 28-14 in the fourth quarter to break a 64-64 tie after three quarter and move onto victory. Brandon Rush had 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks, Ish Smith put in 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and David Lee had 13 points and five boards.

What was probably most impressive for the Warriors was how good Golden State looked on defense. The Warriors decisively won the rebounding battle over New York 47-31. Golden State held Carmelo Anthony to 13 points on three of 13 shooting and Amare Stoudemire to 16 points on five of 14 shooting. It was a great all-around effort by the Warriors, who can cap off a solid week by beating the Philadelphia Sixers on New Year’s Eve.

WARRIORS VS. NEW YORK

Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. at Oracle Arena

TV/Radio: CSNBA; NBA TV; 680-AM

Knicks update: New York showed why it is one of the top teams in the league, outlasting Boston on Christmas Day as Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points and hitting the game-winning shot. … New York claimed guard Jeremy Lin off waivers. The former Warrior and Bay Area native is needed in New York because of injuries. Toney Douglas is the only healthy point guard.

Warriors update: F Brandon Rush and C Kwame Brown figure to play key roles against the Knicks. Those two have emerged as key cogs when coach Mark Jackson goes for a bigger, more defensive lineup. … Jackson has relied mostly on Monta Ellis as the backup point guard. If starter Stephen Curry doesn’t play or is limited, that could spell big minutes for Ellis.

Knicks injuries: G Baron Davis (back) and G Iman Shumpert (knee) are out. F Jared Jeffries (calf) and G Mike Bibby (back) are questionable.

Warriors injuries: Curry (sprained right ankle) is day to day. It will be determined Wednesday if he can play.

— MARCUS THOMPSON II

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

The Golden State Warriors hung tough withe the Los Angeles Clippers for the majority of Christmas night, but fell silent down the stretch, eventually losing Mark Jackson’s first game as an NBA coach. Now the W’s have to refocus themselves for a meeting with the ever so dangerous Chicago Bulls, who are fresh off their nail-biting win over the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday themselves.

Andris Biedrins and David Lee were taking care of business the majority of the night down low, but it was the backcourt that struggled against the Clip Show as a hobbled Stephen Curry finished with more turnovers (5) than points (4) while Monta Ellis went 6-19 from the field, something Golden State will have to improve this evening. Hopefully they can have similar output from bench guys like Brandon Rush and rookie Klay Thompson, each scoring 12 and seven respectfully.

Golden State began Christmas night rigid on defense but folded in the second half, allowing 105 points including 65 in the second half alone. Like the Clippers, the Bulls are a high powered offense, and will prove to be another early test for Jackson and his defense-first mentality.

These two teams split their meetings last season, with each winning a game on their home court. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm PT from Oracle Arena with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

According to numerous reports, the Blazers are expected to use the amnesty clause on Brandon Roy, which will make him available to the rest of the NBA. And Golden State is said to be one of the favorites to land Roy. Per the Contra Costa Times: “A couple team sources let me know that if Brandon Roy is indeed Portland’s amnesty choice, as the Oregonian reported, the Warriors are definitely interested. As everyone knows, Roy’s athleticism has been significantly diminished by knee injuries, and he’s been injury prone lately. But the Warriors are willing to use what he has for the right price. They view him as a good locker room presence (which is what they need for rookie Klay Thompson), someone with good size and a great skillset, and another option for late in games. With Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry in tow, the Warriors have the luxury of not needing Roy to be the All-Star he once was. If he is willing to come off the bench and play more of a complimentary role, the Warriors would probably make an offer (depending on how things go with their other targets). I’m told the Seattle native he would prefer to stay on the West Coast, and he would like to play for the Warriors. It needs to be pointed out that Roy’s former agent, Bob Myers, is now the assistant GM for the Warriors.”

A tentative agreement has been reached to end the NBA lockout.

Bruce Jenkins says this is terrific news for the Warriors. Owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have had more than enough time to set the framework for a new season, and while they were sympathetic to their fellow owners’ plight, they were alarmed at the prospect of a cancelled season. The Warriors also have a young team that showed elements of cohesion last season — particularly between Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis — so they won’t be at a disadvantage in terms of building team chemistry in a hurry.

Stephen Curry and the Warriors received a scare last week when the third-year guard was involved in a two-car accident near his hometown of Charlotte, N.C.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Curry wasn’t injured and was able to walk away from the crash after his car ran into another car.

“He’s fine,” Dell Curry told the Observer Tuesday night. “He ran into the back of someone who stopped short.”

Curry, who starred at Davidson, is currently attending classes there and rehabbing from offseason ankle surgery during the NBA lockout.

Curry averaged 18.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game last season as Golden State’s point guard.

Monta Ellis, Curry’s backcourt mate with the Warriors, suffered a much worse offseason accident three years ago when he injured his ankle in a motor scooter crash. Ellis missed all but 25 games of the 2008-09 season because of the injury and a subsequent suspension for misleading the team about the cause of his injury.

InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner and a few other reporters met with Lee for the following interview, which took place at Impact training gym in Las Vegas in late September:

Read More: 2011 nba mock draft, Kemba Walker (G – UConn), Klay Thompson (G – Washington St.), Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings

Chad Ford released his latest mock draft ($), and it’s eerily similar to some earlier predictions. Guard Kemba Walker ended up with the Sacramento Kings with the seventh pick, just as Tom Ziller with SB Nation predicts. Ford believes general manager Geoff Petrie will go with a safe bet to ensure he stays put and his job security remains relatively strong. Ford probably doesn’t realize Petrie lives for the unconventional. There’s a good shot he ends up going with an unknown this late in an unconventional draft.

As for the Warriors, Klay Thompson of the Washington State Cougars is their guy. Thompson has already been spotted by Jerry West as one of his favorites, and if Golden State is keen on dealing Monta Ellis, this might be the guy to take. Thompson isn’t a sure bet to produce at the same level at Ellis, and his defensive abilities are far from certain, but it could provide a step toward the defensive-minded approach the Warriors are now looking to take with new head coach Mark Jackson.

Monta Ellis could be traded this summer.

The Orlando Magic are one of a handful of teams who’ve spoken to the Golden State Warriors about acquiring Monta Ellis, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Based on comments from new team consultant Jerry West last week, it appears the Warriors are looking to split up the guard duo of Ellis and Stephen Curry, who aren’t a very good complement because they’re both undersized and both like the ball in their hands.

That puts Ellis, a 25-year-old who averaged 24.1 points last season, on the trading block, and he’s receiving plenty of interest. Rusty Simmons of the Chronicle, citing league sources, said the Warriors have discussed trades with Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando and the Lakers. The league’s hottest rumor involves Ellis being traded to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala straight up.

Ellis’ inefficiency and lack of defensive performance doesn’t make him a perfect fit in Orlando, but his ability to create shots is something the Magic sorely lack. As a pure scorer, he’s one of the ten best perimeter players in the NBA.

The Magic’s most valuable trading asset, Jameer Nelson, offers little value to the Warriors because of Curry, but the Warriors could potentially have interest in one of the Magic’s young role players. While the other teams linked to the Warriors could all offer more than the Magic, it’s unclear if they want to.

If the Ellis-for-Iguodala swap falls through, this will certainly be a situation to monitor.
