Golden State Warriors’ Wright’s 3-point shooting…
Posted on 02 January 2012.
In his younger days, Warriors forward Dorell Wright said he would be much more bothered by shooting 17.6 percent from 3-point range over the season’s first four games. But Wright, in his eighth season, said he has no doubt he will return to being Golden State’s 3-point specialist.
“It’s a matter of time,” Wright said. “I’m going to get hot, and everybody will forget about this little four-game stretch or however long it lasts. “? In due time, my shot will be back.”
Last season, Wright proved to be one of the league’s best signings. In his first season with the Warriors, he knocked down 194 3-pointers. In his previous six seasons, Wright totaled 73 from behind the arc.
Wright’s 3-point shooting became one of the most reliable components of the Warriors offense last season. But that’s a luxury Golden State hasn’t had this season. He’s missed 14 of the 17 he’s taken.
Since much of his offensive game is based on his 3-pointer, Wright hasn’t been able to get much of anything going offensively. He’s averaging 8.3 points (half what he averaged last season) on 34.3 percent shooting. Saturday, when the Warriors needed offense with guard Monta Ellis out, Wright totaled four points on 2-for-10 shooting.
With Wright not knocking down his 3-pointers (the Warriors are shooting 27.5 percent from deep), opposing defenses are not paying a price for packing in the lane. With no big man to create offense, the
Warriors rely on outside shooting to open up the paint so Ellis & Co. can penetrate.
“It helps when he makes the shot because it’s another weapon that they’ve got to protect and work against,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said of Wright. “When he makes that shot, it’s more breathing room for everybody else on the floor. So we certainly need it.”
So what’s wrong with Wright’s shot?
He said it boils down to mechanics. He said usually when he misses, he knows exactly what’s wrong.
To fix it, Wright said he’s shooting more before and after practice. He also said he hired someone to break down game film of his shooting so he can study his mechanics.
But mostly, to get out of his slump, Wright said he is focusing on defense. After all, that’s what Wright hung his hat on before joining the Warriors last summer.
“To tell you the truth, I really don’t care about the offensive end,” Wright said. “It’s not like that anymore around here. It’s not like if you can’t score 15, 16 points you’re coming out the game. … Whatever I’m contributing is a plus.”
It’s doubtful Jackson would go that far. Golden State is 26th in the NBA in points per game at 89.0 — more than 14 points below last season’s average. The Warriors rank 21st in field goal percentage (42.2).
Especially for the upcoming three-game road trip, Golden State needs Wright to get going on offense.
That’s all the news for today.

Monta Ellis Status Update: Warriors Guard Will…
Posted on 01 January 2012.
Read More: Monta Ellis (G – GSW), Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors
Monta Ellis, the Golden State Warriors shooting guard and leading scorer, will miss the team’s New Years Eve game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a recent death in the family.
According to Marcus Thompson of the Contra Costa Times, Ellis’ grandmother passed away on Christmas morning and the Warriors guard is still in Mississippi with his family. Her funeral was today and he will be unable to join his teammates in time for the game. He will stay with his family on Saturday before rejoining the Warriors on Sunday in Phoenix in time to play the Suns on Sunday.
Ellis averages 21 points per game and 7.7 assists and the Warriors will have a tough time replacing him against a team that averages just over 100 points per game. Brandon Rush and Klay Thompson will likely fill in for Ellis while he’s with his family.

Golden State in first place after win over Knicks
Posted on 29 December 2011.
OAKLAND — Monta Ellis shook off a terrible first half to finish with 22 points and eight assists, Brandon Rush added 19 points off the bench and the Golden State Warriors beat the New York Knicks 92-78 on Wednesday night.
Playing without injured guard Stephen Curry, the Warriors led by as much as 19 before cruising to their second straight impressive win over an Eastern Conference team. Two nights earlier Golden State (2-1) beat the Chicago Bulls 99-91.
Ish Smith had 11 points, four assists and six rebounds while starting in place of Curry, who sat out the game after injuring his surgically repaired ankle against Chicago.
Amare Stoudemire finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for New York while Carmelo Anthony had 13 points.
Ellis went just 4 of 15 in the first half but scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, midway through the fourth quarter when Golden State pulled away.
The Warriors did it once again behind their defense, which stymied Stoudemire and Anthony most of the night. The two combined to go just 8 of 27 and were only 13 for 19 on free throws.
No one else could pick up the scoring slack for the Knicks, who were also outrebounded 47-31 by the smaller but quicker Warriors.
Landry Fields had 13 of his 14 points in the first half. Bill Walker also scored 14 for the Knicks, who failed in their bid to start the season with consecutive victories for the first time since 1999.
Former Knick David Lee scored 13 points for Golden State (2-1).
This was the first stop on a three-game trip to the West Coast for New York.
The Knicks, who beat the Celtics on Christmas Day to kick off the truncated NBA schedule after losing all eight games to Boston in 2010, play the Lakers in Los Angeles on Thursday. They return to Northern California to face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.
The Warriors played without Curry, who landed awkwardly on his surgically repaired right ankle in the fourth quarter of Monday’s win over Chicago.
It was the second time in seven days that Curry injured the ankle. He also missed eight games last season because of lingering ankle problems.
“It was the best thing to give it some time to heal,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said before the game. “Bottom line is he got hurt landing on somebody and we are going to give it some time to heal.”
Smith started in place of Curry and scored seven of Golden State’s first 10 points. He finished 5 of 13 from the floor.
Anthony and Stoudemire couldn’t get much of anything to fall. The duo repeatedly settled for long jumpers, a trend that continued deep into the fourth quarter.
Even with their two stars off to a slow start, the Knicks took a 43-37 lead into the half.
Golden State closed the gap with a 15-5 run early in the second half, tied the game at 64 when Rush made a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining in the third quarter, then took control with 20-6 burst in the fourth.
The Warriors opened a 19-point lead with 4:09 left when the Knicks frustrations began to show. Tyson Chandler tossed Lee to the ground and was whistled for a technical foul, bringing the sold-out crowd at Oracle Arena to its feet.
Notes: The Warriors have agreed to terms with 7-foot-1 free agent center Kyrylo Fesenko on a one-year contract pending Fesenko passing a physical. Fesenko, who spent the past four seasons mostly as a backup with the Utah Jazz, was in Golden State’s locker room before the game but neither nor the Warriors can talk about the deal until it is complete. … The Warriors have sold out the first three games on this four-game homestand. … Former Golden State guard Jeremy Lin, who signed with the Knicks on Tuesday, entered the game late in the fourth quarter and missed his only shot attempt.

Warriors Vs. Knicks: Monta Ellis Steps Up, Leads…

Read More: Carmelo Anthony (F – NYK), Monta Ellis (G – GSW), David Lee (F – GSW), Amare Stoudemire (F – NYK), Brandon Rush (G – GSW), Stephen Curry (G – GSW), Ish Smith (G – GSW), New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks at Golden State Warriors, Dec 28, 2011 7:30 PM PST
The Golden State Warriors had to make do without a point guard, as Stephen Curry continues to struggle with ankle issues. So why not use Monta Ellis and let him handle the ball a bit.
Ellis was four of 15 from the field in the first half, but then scored eight crucial points to break open a fairly tight contest between the Warriors and the New York Knicks. Golden State outscored New York 28-14 in the fourth quarter to break a 64-64 tie after three quarter and move onto victory. Brandon Rush had 19 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks, Ish Smith put in 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, and David Lee had 13 points and five boards.
What was probably most impressive for the Warriors was how good Golden State looked on defense. The Warriors decisively won the rebounding battle over New York 47-31. Golden State held Carmelo Anthony to 13 points on three of 13 shooting and Amare Stoudemire to 16 points on five of 14 shooting. It was a great all-around effort by the Warriors, who can cap off a solid week by beating the Philadelphia Sixers on New Year’s Eve.

Golden State Warriors rally to beat New York…
Posted on 29 December 2011.
Warriors players and coaches always brag about how they are loaded with scorers. They say they just need to focus on defense because the offense will come.
Although it looked doubtful for a while Wednesday night, the offense indeed showed up, even as point guard Stephen Curry didn’t play to rest his injured right ankle.
Monta Ellis scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors knocked off the visiting New York Knicks 92-78.
Ellis was in position to take over the game because defense kept the Warriors in the game.
Golden State out-rebounded the Knicks by 16 and held New York to 40 percent shooting. Wednesday marked the fifth time in the past five years the Warriors held an opponent below 80 points. Last season, the lowest point total allowed by the Warriors was 83.
The Warriors held the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire to a combined 29 points on 8-for-27 shooting. Stoudemire had five turnovers, and Anthony had a point on four attempts in the fourth quarter.
“Great players are going to come in and have great nights,” coach Mark Jackson said. “But our job is to make it tough. … Our guys did a great job of competing. We had a bad first half offensively, but the defense gave us a chance to win a ballgame.”
The absence of Curry was notable in the first half. He was held out of the lineup to rest his ailing ankle, which he aggravated Monday. Since he did not play against the Knicks,
Curry will have four full days of rest before the Warriors play host to Philadelphia on Saturday.
As a result, Golden State shot just 35 percent in the first half while turning the ball over 10 times. Ellis missed 11 of his 15 shots. He was 0 for 3 from 3-point range in the second quarter, when Golden State managed just 16 points.
Before Ellis found his rhythm in the fourth quarter, Golden State had to turn to unlikely sources for offense at crucial junctures.
Swingman Brandon Rush scored 12 points in the third quarter, helping the Warriors turn a seven-point deficit into a 64-all tie entering the fourth. Forward Dominic McGuire scored four points during an 8-1 Warriors run to start the final period.
The Warriors were able to bide time until Ellis found his stroke.
It started with a left-handed finger roll, set up by a give-and-go with David Lee, putting Golden State ahead 74-68 with about nine minutes left. Minutes later, Ellis put the Warriors up 14 with a pull-up 3-pointer. He then iced the game in front of the Knicks bench with a turnaround 3-pointer at the 4:09 mark, putting the Warriors up 89-70.
Ellis’ surge and staunch defense turned a close game into a blowout. New York made just 5 of 19 shots in the fourth quarter.
The coach could have moved Ellis to point guard and started Rush or rookie Klay Thompson at shooting guard. He could have given the nod to rookie point guard Charles Jenkins, who has been with the team since training camp and has earned plenty of praise from Jackson.
Instead, he chose Ish Smith, a guy who hasn’t been with the Warriors for even two weeks. That’s got to be a confidence boost for a guy who was waived by Memphis two weeks ago.
“It depends on how much he yells at me,” Smith said, smiling. “Coach Jackson was one of the best point guards to ever play in the NBA. I’m just picking his brain as much as I can, and I know he’s going to do some yelling at me.”
The second-year point guard from Wake Forest responded by scoring 11 points with four assists. He grabbed a career-high six rebounds to go with two steals in 29 minutes.
“Ish is a guy that was on the streets a week ago looking for a job, and here he is playing, being counted on to make plays,” Jackson said. “He did an outstanding job. … He really gave us some quality minutes and gave us a chance to win this game.”
“I’m on my way to pick up my daughter from school,” Chandler said. “I don’t know where he was coming from, and we just made eye contact driving down the street. The oddest moment in my career.”
Chandler said he was 24 hours away from signing with the Warriors. He said he wanted to make a decision before training camp started and, if not for an 11th-hour offer from New York, he would have signed with Golden State.
In the end, Chandler signed a four-year, $54 million deal with the Knicks.

New York Knicks Vs. Golden State Warriors Preview:…
Posted on 28 December 2011.
The New York Knicks head out on the road to take on the Golden State Warriors Wednesday night (Dec. 28). It’s a tough game because of the depth and youth that the Warriors have on their side, but a good aspect of this match-up is that Stephen Curry may miss the game with an injury.
Curry is one of the best young guards in the NBA, but he is down with an injured ankle that he suffered in the preseason and then re-aggravated. Curry averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 assists as the point guard for the Warriors last season and was looking to improve upon those numbers. He played in the first two games for the Warriors this season, averaging 12.5 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, so having him out of the game really helps New York. There is a chance he feels better by game time, but even if he plays, Curry will have limited mobility.
For the Knicks, this is a great chance to prove something to the rest of the league. Having a road trip to the West Coast this early in the season is a tough endeavor, with games against Golden State Wednesday (Dec. 28), the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday (Dec. 29) and the Sacramento Kings on Saturday (Dec. 31). Hopefully it’s a test that the team can pass, and that by the end of December the Knicks are sitting in first place with a 4-0 record.
The Knicks are also still trying to figure things out with a host of new players this season. Guard Mike Bibby is back in the lineup and should provide some minutes off the bench and that is extremely important with Iman Shumpert out due to an injury he suffered in the first game.
The starters for the Knicks are point guard Toney Douglas, shooting guard Landry Fields, small forward Carmelo Anthony, power forward Amare Stoudemire and center Tyson Chandler. For the Warriors, the starters could shift if Curry is unable to play. The most likely scenario is that Monta Ellis shifts to point guard and Brandon Rush joins the starting lineup as the shooting guard. Starting at small forward is Dorell Wright, at power forward is David Lee and at center is Andris Biedrins.
The Warriors are averaging 92.5 points per game while giving up 98 per game through the first two opponents. The team has posted a 1-1 record and is grabbing 42 rebounds per night. New York scored 106 points in the game against the Boston Celtics and gave up 104 points. The team only managed 31 rebounds though, making the Knicks the worst rebounding team in the NBA so far. Hopefully that can change a bit on Wednesday night.
Anthony is also the leading scorer in the NBA with 37 points per game and Chandler is second in blocks at 6 per game. Those are just stats from one game and the Knicks hope they can get duplicated on Wednesday night. Start time is at 10:30 p.m. ET and the game is on NBA TV for fans to watch.

Golden State Warriors Get First Win of Season by…
Posted on 27 December 2011.
What a difference one night can make. Just 24 hours after getting blown out by the Los Angeles Clippers 105-86 to kick off their season in underwhelming fashion, the Golden State Warriors put on an absolute clinic at the Oracle Arena in Oakland on Monday night, beating the Chicago Bulls 99-91. What a way for my hometown team to get their first win of the shortened 66-game campaign, and Mark Jackson his first ever coaching victory.
As I wrote yesterday, it appears that the Warriors are going to go as Stephen Curry goes, and he most certainly went last night. After a dismal opening day performance, Curry showed flashes of the brilliant point guard we are all hoping he’ll be, putting up an amazing stat line of 21 points, ten assists, seven rebounds, and six steals, not to mention a couple of breathtaking alley-oops, including a three-quarters court toss to Dorell Wright. And that’s all with missing a large chunk of the fourth quarter after re-injuring his ankle yet again, this time after landing on Kyle Korver’s foot. (Apparently Curry is going to have to miss the Warriors’ next game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday, making an already tough contest even tougher).
Jackson has been stressing that this Golden State Warriors team is going to be focused around defense, so perhaps it’s only fitting that in his first ever win, the team played great D on reigning league MVP Derrick Rose, holding him to 13 points on 4 of 17 shooting, and that they also managed to rack up 16 steals in the process. I know it’s been a while since there’s been basketball, but this was the best defensive effort that I’ve seen from a W’s team in a very, very long time.
And I’m not going to say that I’m right (it’s only been two games after all), but Kwame Brown’s performance Monday night was inspired. In 23 solid minutes off of the bench, the big man made in impact defending against the always tough Joakim Noah. And a +/- of +21? Nicely done, Kwame.
So what does it all mean? That the Warriors are going to play tough D, beat up on good Eastern Conference teams, effectively use 11 players (there is no telling the depths of Coach Jackson’s bench), and win games without scoring 100 points? Probably not. But even if this is just a one-time thing, it was great to see the W’s put together a performance that shows the potential of what this team could one day be.
Can they do it again on Wednesday without Curry against the Knicks? I’m not going to be the one who says that they can’t.

Warriors Vs. Bulls, NBA Preview: W’s Face Second…
Posted on 26 December 2011.
Read More: mark jackson, oracle arena, 2011-12 nba schedule, 2011-12 nba season, Andris Biedrins (C – GSW), Monta Ellis (G – GSW), David Lee (F – GSW), Brandon Rush (G – GSW), Stephen Curry (G – GSW), Klay Thompson (G – GSW), Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls at Golden State Warriors, Dec 26, 2011 7:30 PM PST
The Golden State Warriors hung tough withe the Los Angeles Clippers for the majority of Christmas night, but fell silent down the stretch, eventually losing Mark Jackson’s first game as an NBA coach. Now the W’s have to refocus themselves for a meeting with the ever so dangerous Chicago Bulls, who are fresh off their nail-biting win over the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday themselves.
Andris Biedrins and David Lee were taking care of business the majority of the night down low, but it was the backcourt that struggled against the Clip Show as a hobbled Stephen Curry finished with more turnovers (5) than points (4) while Monta Ellis went 6-19 from the field, something Golden State will have to improve this evening. Hopefully they can have similar output from bench guys like Brandon Rush and rookie Klay Thompson, each scoring 12 and seven respectfully.
Golden State began Christmas night rigid on defense but folded in the second half, allowing 105 points including 65 in the second half alone. Like the Clippers, the Bulls are a high powered offense, and will prove to be another early test for Jackson and his defense-first mentality.
These two teams split their meetings last season, with each winning a game on their home court. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm PT from Oracle Arena with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.
