OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Little about Bob Myers fits the mold of most NBA general managers.

At 37 years old, the new Golden State Warriors GM is one of the youngest at his position. He also has taken a rare path to Golden State’s front office.

A member of the 1995 NCAA champion UCLA basketball team, Myers has gone from sports agent to assistant general manager to GM of his hometown franchise in only a year. At Golden State, Myers has big plans – and bigger challenges – as he takes over basketball operations for a franchise with one playoff appearance since 1994.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

by Irv Soonachan / @SidelineOB

SLAMonline has learned the Golden State Warriors have made out-of-court settlements this week in two sexual harassment claims against the team.

Former Director of Community Relations Erika Smith and former dance team director Susan Hovey have each agreed to out-of-court settlements with the Warriors in their respective cases. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Smith sued the team in December alleging that former Warriors guard Monta Ellis sent her 61 unwanted text messages in December 2010, including a photo of his genitals. Her complaint also alleges she was fired after informing team officials that a local newspaper reporter had questioned her about receiving messages from Ellis.

The settlement comes less than five months after the team issued a public response to Smith’s suit stating they would “vigorously defend the reputation of the Warriors organization in the courts.” The team also claimed in its response that Smith’s interactions with Ellis were consensual.

The Warriors avoided another potential lawsuit by agreeing to an out of court settlement with Hovey, who had accused a team executive of sending suggestive emails and other inappropriate communications. Hovey left the Warriors prior to last season for a similar role with the Detroit Pistons.

The settlements with Hovey and Smith bring the total to at least four sexual harassment claims settled out of court by the Warriors since owner Joe Lacob completed his purchase of the team in November 2010.

The Warriors have not yet responded to requests for comment. Hovey and Smith declined to comment.

NOTE: Shortly after this story was published, a Warriors spokesperson responded to SLAM with an email confirming that Erika Smith had dismissed her case against the team and by issuing the following statement on Susan Hovey: “The parties have amicably resolved any issues arising from Employee’s employment with the Company.”

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

The Warriors announced Saturday that center Andrew Bogut is out three months after arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle Friday.

Dr. Richard Ferkel cleaned out loose particles and bone spurs. Bogut, who fractured the ankle Jan. 25 while with the Milwaukee Bucks, is expected to be ready in time for training camp in October.

Bogut, acquired by the Warriors on March 13, was the third Warriors starter to have surgery last week.

Point guard Stephen Curry had his right ankle cleaned out Wednesday, also by Ferkel. Forward David Lee had surgery Thursday, performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, to repair torn abdominal muscles and abductors. Curry and Lee also are expected to be ready for camp.

SALT LAKE CITY — Much to the Utah Jazz’s chagrin, the Golden State Warriors finally won something.

Foldin’, er, Golden State, which lost 10 of its final 11 games, won a tiebreaker with the Toronto Raptors on Friday through “random drawings” at the NBA office and will be slotted in the No. 7 position of the 2012 lottery.

Unless another team leapfrogs the Warriors by winning one of the three top lottery picks, the Jazz will not receive Golden State’s top-seven protected first-round selection this year.

Thanks to the Deron Williams deal, the Jazz can still acquire a first-round pick from Golden State in 2013 or ’14, but those picks also have protections (top seven and six, respectively). If the Warriors aren’t passed up this season and keep their own picks the next two years, Utah will receive two future second-round picks. The Jazz also received Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter (the Nets’ top pick last year) and $3 million for D-Will in that trade that is looking more lopsided in Utah’s favor.

The Warriors went 5-18 after Golden State owner Joe Lacob publicly talked about wanting to keep the first-round pick on Bay Area radio station KNBR, saying on March 20, “We think we can get our pick back.” According to the Contra Costa Times, the owner reportedly claimed the Warriors and Jazz had discussed options as to how Golden State could retain its pick.

In March, Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor gave a “no comment” about that report. This week, he didn’t want to delve into the Warriors’ late-season slide that made Friday’s tiebreaker possible.

“It’s none of my business what they do,” O’Connor said. “I’ve got absolutely no control over that. Zero.”

For now, Utah only has one pick in the two-round draft — No. 47 overall. The Jazz had to give up their first-round selection (18th overall after tiebreakers) to Minnesota to finalize the 2010 Al Jefferson trade.

HE’LL BE BACK: Jazz forward Paul Millsap dressed but didn’t play in Thursday’s regular-season finale because of a strained adductor (groin). The chances of him sitting out Game 1 against the Spurs, however, are between nil and none.

“I could have played (Thursday),” Millsap said. “But it was an executive decision to sit it out, let it heal fully and be ready for Sunday.”

Millsap, who only missed two games this season due to injury, said his adductor has bothered him “off and on” for a while. But, he added, “I found a way just to put it in the back of my head.”

Thompson, Jenkins and Tyler are all Warriors draft picks, while Wright was a training camp invitee and Gladness joined the team after signing a 10-day contract earlier this month. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, which has been tracking the stat since the 1970-71 season, it’s the first time an NBA team has started five rookies in a game.”

This wasn’t how the season was supposed to end for the Warriors, with five rookies starting, three of the best players recovering from surgery, and the organization apologizing to fans by offering half-price concessions.

After playoff predictions from the owner and the head coach, with all the hope going into this season, this wasn’t how it was supposed to end. Playing out the string. Praying for a lottery pick.

“The dream was much better than it turned out to be in the first year,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said.

Thursday’s 107-101 loss to San Antonio’s junior varsity squad — the Spurs played without Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker or coach Gregg Popovich, and former Saint Mary’s College star Patty Mills had career highs of 34 points and 12 assists — put the 2011-12 Warriors season out of its misery. Golden State closes the lockout shortened campaign 23-43, having lost 22 of its last 27 games.

But the good news for Warriors fans isn’t just that the season is over. Despite a career-high 25 points and eight rebounds for rookie forward Chris Wright, the Warriors lost and wound up tied with Toronto for the seventh-worst record in the NBA. If Golden State lands outside of the top seven in the draft lottery, its pick goes to the Utah Jazz based on a trade from 2008.

Friday, the league will hold a random drawing to break the tie. If the Warriors win the drawing, they’ll be slotted No. 7 and have a 72.5 percent chance of

keeping their first-round pick — a 12.6 percent chance they move up, and a 59.9 percent chance they stay at No. 7. The only way the Warriors wouldn’t keep their pick is if a team below them moved into the top three.

If the Warriors lose the drawing, they’ll be slotted No. 8 and have a 12.4 percent chance of moving into the top three and keeping their pick. The draft lottery is May 30.

It’s a fitting end to the season. Warriors fans begging, praying, for a loss so Golden State can keep its draft pick. That’s how far this season has spiraled.

How bad is it? Thursday, Golden State started five rookies: Klay Thompson and Charles Jenkins in the backcourt, and on the front line Jeremy Tyler, Mickell Gladness and Chris Wright. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that hasn’t been done in the NBA since 1970-71.

This year, however, is unlike debacles of years past in that the Warriors have, on paper, set the franchise on a different course. This disaster of a finish to the season is made a bit more palatable by a few things.

The acquisition of a true NBA center, Andrew Bogut, which set the Warriors on this collision course with the draft lottery, has given management high hopes for next season. The development of their rookies, especially Thompson, has given value to this last month-plus of games.

It wasn’t supposed to end this way. But it’s partially OK because next year isn’t going to. At least that’s the hope.

“It’s hard to lose,” new general manager Bob Myers said. “If you like to compete and win, on that level it’s been tough to lose this many games. But big picture, we made some changes that will help us going forward. So moving ahead, I like where are. But going through the process of getting there has been tough.”

A large part of the blame goes to the trade for the injured Bogut, in which the Warriors gave up star guard Monta Ellis and up-and-coming big man Ekpe Udoh. The wheels fell off after that.

Since then, everything has pointed to next season — the remainder of the 2011-12 campaign serving as the step back to take two steps forward. Since then, three starters opted for surgery with hopes of ensuring they’ll be ready to go in October.

Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle. He’s out up to four months. Power forward David Lee, the team announced Thursday, had successful surgery to repair torn abdominal muscles and abductors. He’s out up to six weeks. Bogut will undergo surgery Friday. Dr. Richard Ferkel, the same specialist who operated on Curry, will clean out debris and scar tissue from Bogut’s ankle.

This is all happening now because next season just can’t end like this one.

“Health has got to be key,” Jackson said. “We are not fooling ourselves. We need those three guys to be healthy. Our rookies have got to come back better. As an organization, with Bob, we have to make the right decisions — whether that be the draft, free agency or any other way to improve ourselves.”

Myers said — after watching the Warriors get pounded on the boards all season — he’s going to try to add depth this offseason, get more size in the frontcourt. He also has to find a fifth starter to add to the four already penciled in (Curry, Thompson, Lee and Bogut). He said that could be one of the small forwards on the roster — incumbent Dorell Wright or reserves Brandon Rush and Dominic McGuire.

The Warriors don’t have too much to work with. They’ll be right at or over the salary cap. They might not have a lottery pick. And they don’t have young players they want to give up or huge expiring contracts to swap with.

Stopping short of promising anything, Myers said the Warriors won’t have any excuses. This year wasn’t supposed to end this way. And next year definitely can’t.

“Fans of this organization have every right to question whatever they want. They’ve been tremendous,” Myers said. “Fans are going to question the decisions the Warriors make until we win. Until we win, they’re going to keep asking questions. … And that’s fine. You should. Because if we’re not winning, something’s not happening correctly.”

SALT LAKE CITY — Long after Utah’s victory over Portland Thursday night, another game of interest to the Jazz organization was finishing up 600 miles to the west in Oakland. That’s where Utah’s playoff opponent, San Antonio, was playing Golden State.

The Jazz’s interest had little to do with the Spurs, who looked nothing like the team that will be facing the Jazz Sunday with stars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all sitting out. It was on Golden State, which started five rookies.

The game was close all night before the Spurs pulled away in the final three minutes for a 107-101 victory behind Patty Mills’ 34 points.

Now, besides practicing Friday, the Utah Jazz will be keeping an eye on an important random drawing in New York, which could determine whether they get a lottery pick or not this year.

The coin flip will be between the Warriors and Toronto, which both finished with records of 23-43, tied for seventh worst in the league.

If the coin flip goes go the Jazz’s way (Toronto No. 7, Golden State No. 8), it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get the lottery pick. That will be determined on May 30 when the NBA Draft lottery is held.

The Warriors would keep the draft pick if they end up with a top-three pick in the lottery. The chances of that happening are just 12.4 percent, meaning the Jazz would basically have a nine-in-10 chance of getting the pick.

What do you guys think about this.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Bob Myers showed up for his first game as the new general manager of the Golden State Warriors wearing the same yellow tie with diagonal blue stripes that owner Joe Lacob also had knotted around his neck

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Bob Myers showed up for his first game as the new general manager of the Golden State Warriors wearing the same yellow tie with diagonal blue stripes that owner Joe Lacob also had knotted around his neck.

The unplanned fashion gaffe left both a bit a red-faced, at least at first. The Stefano Ricci tie was a gift by the owner purchased months earlier by his fiancee, Nicole Curran, who apparently bought one for each.

“See,” Myers joked, “we’re already on the same page.”

Golden State‘s new management team certainly looks the part.

Whether they produce enough wins is still to be determined.

The Warriors officially promoted Myers to general manager Tuesday night, speeding up the plan laid out by Lacob when he hired the former sports agent as assistant GM last summer. Former general manager Larry Riley will remain with the organization as director of scouting, and Myers will assume all responsibilities for making out the roster.

Lacob hinted that he originally planned to wait another season but felt no reason to put off the move any longer.

“I’d say the one thing that we probably learned is, when you call the Warriors, it’s a little confusing,” Lacob said. “A lot of voices, and I think some people pointed that out. So I think this cleans up the lines of authority, the lines of communications, a little bit. He has proved he’s very capable of doing that job.”

Golden State’s management is not all the different than the one already in place.

Myers joined the Warriors last April as part of the new owner’s reconstructed front office. Riley, who spent the past four seasons in the front office after working as an assistant coach to NBA career wins leader Don Nelson, was one of the few remaining members of Lacob’s gutted Golden State management.

All involved had always worked under the premise that Myers would move up to the top spot.

The 37-year-old Myers was a sports agent for 14 years, played at UCLA and hails from Danville, just down the street from Oracle Arena in Oakland. He choked up a bit talking about his working for his hometown team, recognizing the opportunity he was just handed, but also acknowledging that he will ultimately be judged by wins and nothing more.

“My love for the NBA started with this team,” Myers said. “It’s more than just a job.”

If for no other reason than change for the sake of change, a new front-office face for a team with one playoff appearance since 1994 will likely bring joy to most fans in the basketball-booming Bay Area.

Myers has been assisting and learning from Riley — who Lacob lauded and labeled a “loyal soldier” — in basketball operations, such as contract negotiations, roster decisions and scouting. Together, the two started to show signs of breaking the trend of Golden State gaffes.

Myers played a part in the trade that netted 2005 No. 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut — expected to be the franchise center starting next season when he’s healthy — from Milwaukee in exchange for leading scorer Monta Ellis among others, and in drafting standout rookie shooting guard Klay Thompson to be Ellis’ replacement previously.

Myers believes, if healthy, next year’s team — expected to be led by Bogut, Stephen Curry, David Lee and Thompson — will make major strides in the Western Conference, and he does believe Curry’s troublesome right ankle will be fine and Bogut’s fractured left ankle will be healed.

He stopped short of making any playoff promises, or any promises really, other than what he’s after on the roster — more size and more veterans.

“I think at the end of the day, that just shows he watches the games,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said, poking fun at his team that had lost eight of nine entering Tuesday night’s game against New Orleans. “It’s really a selling point to have a cool GM.”

The light-hearted comments from Jackson weren’t necessary to keep his job.

Myers and Lacob have been pleased with Jackson this season, and the expectation has always been that the rookie coach will be back for a second season. The relationship between Myers and Jackson goes back decades to when Jackson was represented by Arn Tellum, Myers’ boss at the Wasserman Media Group.

“He’s a home run as far as executives are concerned,” Jackson said. “There’s no part of me shaking that they just gave the reigns to somebody I can’t get along with.”

Myers said he doesn’t plan on bringing in any new members to his staff.

Executive board member Jerry West, assistant general manager Travis Schlenk and director of basketball operations Kirk Lacob, the owner’s son, will assist him along with Riley — who’s exact capacity in scouting is still to be determined. Ultimately, though, Myers and Lacob said it’s up to the new general manager to make the final recommendation to the owner.

“Like any team, somebody’s going to shoot, somebody’s going to rebound, somebody’s going to set screens,” Myers said. “And it doesn’t work if everybody is going to shoot the ball, and it doesn’t work if nobody is going to shoot the ball. I think we have in place now a team.”

Your shot, Myers.

The Warriors made one last splash before the conclusion of the season, promoting Bob Myers to general manager, ending the term of Larry Riley at the helm of the team.

Riely, who has been in the Warriors’ front office for four years, will remain with the team as director of scouting. Myers had previously been Riley’s assistant, and team owner Joe Lacob said they hired him last year with the intention of making this move eventually, but left the timetable open until they got to know Myers a little better.

“Until you really work with someone, you don’t really know,” Lacob said. “Working with Bob, he’s outstanding. He has all the capabilities to do this and be really, really good at it.”

The 37-year-old Myers, who attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, had been a player agent in the NBA for 14 years and was involved with many of the team’s moves during a busy midseason highlighted by trading Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut.

Myers said he plans to keep most of the current management team in place, including NBA legend Jerry West, who Myers referred to as the team’s “old sage.”

Both Myers and Lacob said they believed the moves the organization made this year to have been successful, and said the team now has an overall vision of what its priority will be moving forward.

“It’s about winning,” Myers said. “And if we win, it doesn’t matter who does what or who was right or who was wrong, as a group we’re going to be judged — ultimately I’ll be judged — with how our team does. It’s not what I say today, it’s not what I say tomorrow; it’s come 2012-13, are we winning basketball games?”

Myers played a role in the hiring of coach Mark Jackson, who as a player was represented by Arm Tellem, the firm Myers worked for as an agent.

“There is no side of me that is shaken thinking that they just handed the reins to a guy that I can’t get along with,” Jackson said. “The great thing about him is he’s not afraid to listen. He’s going to make a decision, but it’s going to be an educated decision.”

That’s all the news for today.

WARRIORS VS. NEW ORLEANS

Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. at Oracle Arena

TV/Radio: CSNBA; 1050

Hornets update: New Orleans has won seven of its last 11 games. But the Hornets have lost six of seven on the road since winning at Oracle Arena on March 28. … SF Trevor Ariza, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune, did not travel with team for the season-ending three-game road trip. Ariza is not hurt, but his tenure with the Hornets might be over. He hasn’t played since April 7, as coach Monty Williams has moved Al-Farouq Aminu into the starting lineup. … In his seven games since returning from injury, SG Eric Gordon is averaging 20.4 points on 46 percent shooting in 33.3 minutes.

Warriors update: Golden State has lost three straight at home and 15 of its last 18 overall. … The Warriors need to lose out to best their chances of keeping their first-round pick. If they don’t land a top-seven pick, their selection goes to Utah as part of a previous trade. … In five games since being signed from the NBA Development League, PF/C Mikki Moore has totaled 17 points and 15 rebounds in 69 minutes of action.

Hornets injuries: C Chris Kaman (bruised left tibia) is out.

Warriors injuries: PG Stephen Curry (sprained right ankle), C Andrew Bogut (fractured left ankle) and PF David Lee (strained groin) are out. PG Nate Robinson (strained right hamstring) is doubtful. C Andris Biedrins (concussion) and

SF Dorell Wright (sprained right ankle) are day-to-day.

– MARCUS THOMPSON II

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

The Golden State Warriors will far well short of meeting coach Mark Jackson’s expectations this season, but the team is at least competing until the end.

The New Orleans Hornets need to do the same if they want avoid finishing at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Golden State looks to avoid its first four-game home losing streak since the start of last season when it faces the league-worst Hornets on Tuesday night.

Hired in June with no previous coaching experience, Jackson boldly predicted that he was going to change the culture of a Warriors franchise that had been to the postseason once since 1994.

“I fully expect, put it in bold letters, the Golden State Warriors to be a playoff team next year,” Jackson said a day after begin hired.

That hasn’t happened, as the Warriors have been ravaged by injuries and are 5-19 since trading guard Monta Ellis to Milwaukee for injured center Andrew Bogut in a five-player deal last month.

With Ellis gone and the other four opening-night starters currently injured, Jackson has been forced to start four rookies alongside veteran Richard Jefferson in the last two games.

Despite being without David Lee, Stephen Curry, Bogut, Andris Biedrins, Dorell Wright and Nate Robinson, Golden State (23-41) ended a season-high eight-game losing streak with a 93-88 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

Charles Jenkins scored 24 points and Klay Thompson added 17 to spark the Warriors‘ rally from 21 down in the second half.

“Not just our rookies, overall we did a great job of battling,” said Jackson, whose team lost four times by nine or fewer points during its longest slide of the season. “… They deserve all the credit. The way they competed. We got great individual performances but collectively, we found a way to get the job done.”

The Warriors haven’t won two straight since a season high-tying three-game run March 10-13. They last dropped four in a row at home during a five-game skid Nov. 19-Dec. 10, 2010.

New Orleans (20-44), a 102-87 winner in Oakland on March 28, continues a season-ending three-game trip following a 107-98 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. The Hornets were denied an eighth victory in 11 games by getting outscored by 19 in the final 12 minutes.

“Although I am upset about the loss, I am happy about the way our guys played,” said coach Monty Williams, like Jackson a former New York Knicks first-round draft pick.

Eric Gordon averaged 20.4 points in seven games this month – slightly above his career average – but his missing 55 games this season following knee surgery has contributed to the Hornets looking up at the rest of the teams in the West.

New Orleans, one game back of 14th-place Sacramento, needs to defeat the Warriors and Houston on Thursday, and for the Kings to lose to Oklahoma City and the Lakers to avoid at least a share of the worst record in the conference.

Golden State and New Orleans have alternated wins and losses in the last six games in Oakland.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charles Jenkins had 24 points and nine assists while playing all 48 minutes to rally the Golden State Warriors from a 21-point deficit to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 93-88, on Sunday night.

Brandon Rush scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and also grabbed nine rebounds. Klay Thompson scored 17 points for the Warriors, who snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Nikola Pekovic had 19 points and 16 rebounds, and JJ Barea had 14 points and 12 assists in all 48 minutes for the Timberwolves, who announced earlier that All-Star power forward Kevin Love would not play the final two games of the season because of a concussion.

Jenkins also had six rebounds and the Warriors turned the ball over just nine times while holding the Wolves to 36 percent shooting.

Martell Webster scored 18 points and Anthony Randolph had 14 points, seven boards and five blocks for Minnesota.

The Warriors started rookies Thompson, Jenkins, Jeremy Tyler and Mickell Gladness alongside veteran Richard Jefferson for the fourth straight game, the first time the franchise has done that since it started keeping track of games in 1970-71. The last time any team in the NBA has done that was the 2003 Denver Nuggets.

Playing their third road game in three nights, it took a while for those young legs to wake up on Sunday evening.

With Barea pushing the tempo in the open floor and Pekovic controlling the paint, the Timberwolves surged out to a 53-32 lead late in the second quarter. Webster hit five of his first seven shots for the Wolves and Thompson missed nine of his first 12 shots to help the Warriors dig another big hole.

Just like in their previous meeting in this building, when the Warriors came back from 20 down to beat the Wolves on April 4, Jenkins got rolling in the second half to bring Golden State back. The super-quick point guard scored three straight buckets during a 10-0 run that cut the deficit to 68-63 late in the third quarter.

The Warriors then ripped off a 12-2 surge midway through the fourth quarter, culminating in a jumper from Jenkins to give them their first lead, 83-81, with 5:45 to play.

Pekovic’s putback gave Minnesota an 88-87 lead with 1:28 to go, but Rush came back with a 3, and Dominic McGuire converted a three-point play when he was fouled on a dunk to seal the win.

NOTES: The Wolves made all 21 of their foul shots. … McGuire finished with 12 points and seven boards. … The Timberwolves hosted Rochester resident Igor Voykovinsky, who at 7-foot-8 is the tallest man in America.
